Hello,
We have raised 4 Guinea pigs so but have adopted a baby piggie from the pet store and he won't eat veggies or fruits. We have tried every kind of fruit and veggie. We are scared he will die if he doesn't eat any. The pet store had a HUGE chunk of carrot in his cage that he had been eating on. We was told not to ever give them carrots when we got our first piggies.
Please help me what do I do? Any advice on what to give this baby? It has been 3 weeks now.
Today I tried Apples and a couple small chunks of oranges. He will eat his pellets and hay. What can I give him for the vitamin C?
Thanks in advance Storm.

Welcome to the forum!

Do you know the reasons why they said not to feed carrots? Mine have carrot and love them - I don't feed them everyday though. Things like parsley are usually faves with piggys. You could also try kale, beetroot, cucumber, corn, tomato or cabbage. Just make sure it is only small amounts at first. Does he live alone or with another piggy?

Hi there and welcome :)
Yes Beaney well said :-*
Keep on trying maybe have him with another piggy and he'll see them eating the other foods, poor little one may not realise just how yummy his veggies will be.
Carrots are fine, it's just you have to give them everything in moderation. There's a list on here with which veggies and fruits you can feed him. Good luck and congratulations on your new piggie :-* :-*

First off thank you so much for the nice comments.. I also signed up on another board and they shoved so much crap down my throat because I didn't get my piggie from a shelter. If they would have asked then they would have known we don't have shelters here and our local pet store is the place where these poor piggies are dropped off. The reason we buy them is to pay for their food and stuff while they wait for homes or be put down because no one buys them. :( Them people told me how bad petsmart and petco are and we don't have either one of those places here.

On the carrots the lady that we got our first piggies from said no carrots. I just I guess took her advice and didn't give them to my piggies. I guess they really can have carrots then. :)

I just did something new tonight. I gave him some celery but instead of putting it in a seperate dish I put it in with his handful of pellets he has and he ate some :o I guess maybe I have been doing it wrong all along LOL! With my other piggies I just put the veggies and things in a seprate dish otherwise they won't eat any pellets they expect veggies all day long. I know very weird. But I think from now on I will put the veggies and fruits in his pellet bowl and see how that works. I also have been letting my baby interact with the other piggies. I really only put him in the males cage because I don't want babies. As soon as I get them to where the bigger male isn't all over him I will be more comfortable leaving them together. But for now my older male acts like he is biting the baby so I have to take him out then later re put him in for a little bit.

Thank you guys so much for being so supportive. I can't believe how rude some people can be. I posted the same thing I posted here at another website.

Sorry to hear you've been given a hard time, we try to help where ever we can on here :)
That's great news that he's eaten some celery, just remember to get rid of the stringy bits just in case they get stuck in his teefies :o
What a cheeky monkey liking his food with his pellets hey if it works do it ;D ;D
Sounds like you're doing everything beautifully, as you said you're taking things slowly with the others, well done.
Hope to hear more about your little furbabies and maybe some piccies, we looooooove piccies on here :-*
Oh and about the shelter thing don't let it get to you, some people just talk first and don't listen. Everyone here likes to get them from rescues but if it's not possible well so be it. You've done a wonderful thing he's now got a lovely forever home with you guys :-* :-*

Hello and welcome.
Everyone is nice on here so dont worry about getting an ear bashing. ;D
Cant really comment on the food problem as mine all eat fine, so i'l leave that to the others to answer. Sounds like you're doing fine though. O0

Ooh yes, we all love pigtures!

Hi there and welcome, I'm fairly new here and everyone has been really kind and helpful so don't worry.

You said you were putting the baby into the males' cage? I have read on here and on other websites that to bond piggies (especially males), it helps to introduce them on neutral territory, during playtime perhaps, or two people holding a pig each on your laps on the sofa. If you just put the baby into the males cage they will be territorial - you need to thoroughly clean the cage, disinfect and shift things around so they think it's new territory. Also it's apparently far harder to bond more than two boars, they usually get on better in pairs. I'm sure the others on here will give you more advice and a good webite is www.barmy4boars.com

I was told by a breeder to feed carrots in moderation as there's been some research suggesting a link to bladder stones. Since then I've given mine carrots about twice a week.

Welcome!

Guinea pigs can be fussy little tinkers at times. Its worth persevering though until you get a breakthrough.

Pay no attention to the pet shop haters. They have very good reasons for feeling angry towards petshops, but there is no need to make people feel bad for (sometimes uneducated) choices that they made.
This is a peaceful forum :)

welcome i have 8 guiena pigs and 4 of them are 3 and half weeks old now what idid with them i put come veggies in right from the start there was born on a sunday night so i starting outing little tiny bits in a little dish for them it took them a few days to start to eat it jsut keep puting veggies in all the time he will eating them it will jsut take time

welcome to the forum :)

Carrots are perfectly fine, my lot love them - more so others but all liking them O0

Best to try and introduce them slowly, mixing within their pellet food is a fine way :) My latest two, have been a little slow in taking to new foods - but will try different ones :)

Welcome to the forum - it's great :)

Have you tried cucumber? That always seems to go down well, and it's easy to eat, nice and soft and they get a lot of moisture too, in case you're worried about them drinking.

They're a worry sometimes aren't they! We've all been through it!

When I got my boar he would hardly eat any veg at all. I kept trying and it took a while but he did start eating them now he eats anything. He was so fussy and I posted on another forum just like you have for advice and all I can say is give the new piggie time it will love veggies its proberly just not used to getting them from the home he came from.

Thanks for all the replies, Everyone has been so helpful and I have wonderful advice from all of you to try. O0
I think I may have solved his problem he wanted his food in a bowl LOL! The other adults prefer their veggies and fruits just placed inside the cage. I just have me a picky little baby here. Hahaha

I guess piggies are just like humans we all like things a little different at times.
