hi guys, been thinking for a few days on how to make my own treats for my piggy Millie and have thought up an idea for a recipe but would like to get peoples opinions on it first. so here it is :)

1 cup oats
2 cups guinea pig pellets (broken up)
few tb/spoons water
few tb/spoons natural honey
*optional (blended veggies or fruits)

mix all ingedients together, then make them into little balls and place in the fridge to set.

what do you guys think? think it will be ok for millie and piggies in general to eat? :)

Sounds good but I'm just not sure about the honey in it. I might be wrong about that but I was always under the impression that honey isnt good for them?

i'm not too sure, every recipe i've found contains honey... is there anything else i could use to stick the ingredients together that is good for them? :)

To be honest i doubt a little bit of honey would do them harm, it's only used to bind everything together, you might find if you put a blended fruit in that was quite sticky, like really mushed banana then you may be able to forgo the honey ... but the only way you will know is if you try it.

thats what i thought, if it's only a tiny bit of honey, i don't think it could hurt and i wouldn't be giving it to her all the time it'd only be maybe once or twice a week so will try both and see :)

I think a bit of honey for an infrequent treat would be all right. Those who use nuggets/pellets would see by checking the package that most of them are bound together by molasses! And this is fed evey day. I am sure the honey is better than the molasses.

I made some biccies for my pigs the other day and I used mushed banana, pellets and apple and grated carrot oh yes and some water! Piggys loved them!
Btw I popped them in the oven for a while and they kept for 2 wks.

Course, more than happy for you to try them out! :)

There are different variations on this and if you look online you will be able to find different treats you can make with other things like hay included aswell.

Here's the precise recipe I used to make biccies for my piggys:

2 cups finely ground guinea pig pellets (process in the blender)
1/2 cup shredded carrot
1/2 banana, mashed
1/4 cup shredded apple
1 cup warm water
Mix until a fairly stiff dough forms; mixture should be the consistency of bread dough. Add more ground pellets as needed. Roll to 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface; using a cookie cutter or a small paring knife, cut into shapes and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 9-12 minutes until edges are crispy. Cool, then store in an air-tight container. Cookies will last about 2 weeks; freeze for longer storage.

Different kinds of hay and readigrass and a different tasty herbs and vegetables and prehaps the occasional piece of fruits is much appreciated too!
