Hey all,

Firstly my apologies if I have posted this thread in the wrong place, I had a look round to see if I could find an "introduce yourself" thread but couldn't find anything. I have just bought 2 guinea pigs last night and I'm over the moon with the new additions to our family. I tried to find a rescue centre in my area as I would have preferred to rehome some but there doesn't seem to be any around here and the local rspca didn't have any.

So our new additions are sisters called Athena and Cleo. I'm leaving them to get settled for a few days ( I've read that this is best ) and once they're more used to the surroundings I'll hopefully get a couple of pics up of them

Welcome to The forum :D

I have two piggies, but mine are boars called Grissom and Gizmo

You'll love it here all th people are really friendly and give great advice.

Hi there and welcome to the forum :)

hi welcome to the forum :)

hope you find everything you need to know from here

Hi Gem welcome to the forum, O0
And hi to your new piggies ;) Hope you have a great time here :D

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone :)

vikki2203 I was curious whether you could actually put 2 boars together, I asked at the pet shop last night and the assistant there said that you shouldn't put two together which is why we opted for 2 females. Do yours get on well?

I used to keep guinea pigs when I was younger, and have wanted some for a long time. My boyfriend and I have recently bought a house so I could finally get some again :)

Welcome to the forum. I am sure you will like it hear. :)

I don't know why the assistant at the pet shop said that. Many boars live in pairs quite happily, some even having extremely close bonds. However, boars have to be brought up together from a young age or a baby boar introduced to an adult boar. You can try to pair up adult boars but it is less likely they will take to one another. Boars also go through a teenage period (hormones), which can lead to fights and the bond being broken and not being able to be fixed. All in all though boars can live happily together without any problems. Hope this makes sense. :)

Hello and welcome ;) I have 2 boars that live happily together they are about 1 1/2 they are brothers and love each other dearly. I also have a newly neutered boar who is going to join my 3 girls in a few weeks.

Welcome to the forum! We have 19 piggies with us at the moment :smitten: And three expecting mummies :smitten:

Well I thought when he said that he was giving incorrect information ( although I do wonder how much the assistants in the shop actually know about the pets they sell ). I was told they were brothers so would have thought they'd be ok. But I'm very happy with the 2 cute girls I have :)

19 piggies! definitely a lover of them then!

I've spent most of the morning looking around the site, seeing whats been posted to try and get tips. Like I said I know a bit because I had 3 when I was younger, but its been a while since I kept them!

I'm already looking for outdoor runs ( My piggies are being kept indoors ) I just want to be able to put them out now and again when the weathers nice, they'll be able to roam freely in the downstairs of our house though :)

Yep thats what happpened to my boys when they reached the age of 14 / 15 months, so they were neutered and now have a girlfriend each :) But even now if they catch sight of one another the fur stands up, teeth start chattering.... boys eh ::)

Welcome to the forum :)

Well not all the time, we're looking at what we can do with the hutch, we're trying to get a big run that can be attached to the front so they can have plenty of space to run around while we're not in.

hi Gem welcome to the forum hope you make lots of friends, I've got 14 boys and 15 girls my boys all share a run each i ahev none on their own but they are matched for temprement and brothers from birth so know each other very well, I also have 2 elderly old men together who adore each other yet neither would settle with any of the others for long, see its a waiting and watching game , your girls sound wondeful like you I dont have any rescues near me and the RSPCA rarely get them in, I suppose in a way thats good because no ones giving up on their pigs into a rescue

Sounds brilliant. Your guineas are going to be so happy living with you. Have you thought about C + C cages? O0

Thats what I've just been looking at actually, I've had a look at all the fab ones that people have on here and I think they'd be ideal, just having a look round at places that sell them. I dont think theres any shops around where I live that will sell them so I'm looking for places online.

Michellemuffin - I hope thats the case, although I do worry that there may not be many places in the area who take in unwanted piggies :(

The C&C cages are great because you can build them yourself.. pretty cheap too. Take a Saturday and make a nice big home for them, and it really is easy. If I can make one.. anyone can..HAHA

I have 3 boars, and two live together. They are very happy and will wheek out for the other if one is out too long without the other. They aren't the same breed or ages either. But, they love eachother and get along very nicely. Then I have Robin the biggest of the three. He doesn't get along with anyone. He likes living alone as he is very particular about his cage an accessories being exactly where he wants them. ::) Funny piggies and their personalities!..hehe

You probably have already read it but you can get the grids from Screwfix. :)

welcome to the forum! beware it is slightly addicitive but full of fab ideas and good advice! ;D

i've got 4 sows - matilda, shelby, dorothy and sophie and a boar called harry. and a bunny called norman!

hope your girls are settling in well, keep us posted x

Yeah I've had a look at screwfix, definitely going to be getting some :)

They seem to be settling in ok. When we came back from work some of the food had gone so they've been eating ( not too mention alot of hay!)

We've cleared the conservatory and put some hay in there as well as carrot and cucumber for them to have a play. Although we made a little hiding place out of an old shoe box that we cut a hole in to and they've been in there for a while now, they keep popping out to get more carrot though and dragging it back in! Mine ( Cleo ) seems to be more curious. We sat on the floor with them and kept still so they could get used to us being there and she was coming over to the both of us to have a sniff and was running around. I think Athena is a bit more wary, shes just stayed out the way. We've just left them to have a run around for a bit before we put them to bed :)

sounds a really good start!

made me laugh reading the bit about moving in with you boyfriend so u got piggies.... that exactly what happened with me! as soon as we were settled we got out first two, matilda and shelby ;D and have been besotted ever since!

glad everything seems so be going well. :)

Sounds like they are settling in extremely well. I am glad they are happy and so are you. O0

Nice to meet you Gem!
same happened to me too - me and my boyfriend bought our house 1yr ago - I brought my elderly hamster with me, we then got 1 rabbit (George), then Tiger our long haired piggy, then Marble our magpie bunny who we bought on impulse as he was a big boy squashed in a small cage (grr) in the pet shop, and finally we adopted Jeremy a very naughty but funny big chubby ginger piggy with pink eyes! The buns have separate hutches and runs, and the pigs live alongside each other indoors as they can be a bit niggly with each other, but have playtime together.

Enjoy the forum!

Hello, I'm fairly new here too, Ive got 4 pigs, this time a fortnight ago I had two "boys" called Jake and Milo...... then Jake gave birth to two babies!! I'm keeping the babies and joined the forum when I needed advice about them. The people here are wonderful.

Nicky x

Well we've been in the house for a month and because I dont have my dog anymore ( he's 9 and it would have been unfair to take him from my mams where theres someone with him most of the day ) I thought I'd get some guinea pigs as I missed having a pet. My boyfriend sometimes has to work away so it'll be nice to just have them there for cuddles :)

I think my cleo is definitely the inquisitive one. I got up this morning and she popped her head out to see what was going on, then when I took her food bowl out to feed them she ran over where it was as if it say where has it gone. I put some carrot in ( which seems to be their favourite ) along with their food and some fruit and she kept running out to grab a piece of carrot then running back to their sleeping part. She's so cute! Little athena is still staying in the sleeping part most of the time, we haven't really seen her come out much. I'm sure she'll adjust though.

I'm trying out different fruit and veg to see what they like, they go mad over carrot but that seems to be the only thing they like so far.
