I'm going to be getting my first piggies in the next few weeks. I'm in the UK, what is the best hay to get please?

A good quality green timothy hay is really great for guinea pigs. Although- it is fairly expensive. I bed my piggies on meadow hay that I just buy from my local pet shop/ garden centre, but I also buy good quality timothy hay and give them several piles of that to munch through every morning/ evening. Two good brands and Oxbow timothy hay and Alfalfa King timothy hay.

I buy the large bags of B&M hay plus their small bag with dandelions. I also buy B&M hay cakes which my 2 love.

Mine also love the B&M hay so much that I've stopped ordering different hay online and nip to my local shop for the darlings.

In honesty, the B&M Bargains timothy hay with dandelions does always looks really good. I did buy it a number of times for my piggies, they loved eating the flowers! But for some reason although they were very interested in the hay, they didn't eat it! They just seemed to find the smell really interesting, and would like to just kick it and bunch it up with their front legs, then sit on it. And not eat it! Strange pigs! It is very soft though (great for a bed!), and it never seemed to have any dust. It is labelled as timothy hay, but is very different to the Oxbow or King Alfalfa hay I've linked to above. They are quite course/ thick stems with lots of grass heads, where as the B&M timothy hay is very fine like dried grass.

I have the Burgess hay with dandelions and something in it, but I haven't opened it yet. My two are on Timothy feeding hay as it was the only one that I could get quickly. I have been told to give only small amounts of the Burgess one.

Will any hay do for piggies? Are some better than others? I really am new to this.

Its not good to give them too much Alfalfa hay for guinea's over 6 months. Otherwise just make sure they always have hay available.

An easy toy for them is to stuff some hay in a brown paper bag and let them have fun with it.
