Hi all,
I was shopping for some bedding for my pigaroos today and I stumbled upon these pellets I've never seen or heard of before .
They're 'Versele-laga' and I'm no expert but they look pretty good. I googled
The ingredients and they seem ok,but I'm by no means an expert. I cannot see any calcium at all in there, so that was main reason I bought it. Pigs went crazy for it, but I gave them a tiny amount as these pellets are much bigger than the oxbow ones. Here's the picture of both front and ingredients as shown on the back:

What do you all think? x

I've seen the brand on Zooplus but don't know anything about them

I've seen them mentioned on here a few times. In the 'theoretically good but only if your pigs will touch them' type bracket hehe. I'm also with @Tiny though and want to know where you found them for so cheap!

I found them for 99p a packet too in a local pet shop, perhaps they aren't selling well?

THEY WERE 99P?!?!
:yikes:
Yup they were, which is why I'm a bit suspicious - They're are either cheap as they are not too good or they're cheap and natural and basic ingredients were used- which is good. Confused.com

I found them in a local pet shop centre. They have loads of different things not available in other stores like pets at home etc... we usually get bedding from there as they have such wide range of products to chose from and test and so cheap too.

Hmmmm.yes my 6 pigs definitely devoured them.

I've heard of the brand but not tried any of their food - but for 99p it's definitely worth a punt! For that price, even if the piggies didn't like it you've hardly spent anything and could always donate the bag to a local rescue. :)

I'd suggest looking to see if there's a production/use by date just in case it's cheap because it's been hanging around for ages, but I imagine it might just be the last of the shop's stock and you got a real bargain

Yes I did that in store too as my partner and I were like, am I seeing it right ? Perhaps it's £6.99 ( I forgot my glasses:yikes:) but we th thought to her check the date and it's fine ...
Seems too good to be true doesn't it?

They are fantastic pellets- high quality natural ingredients and grain free.
My lot love them and at that price you got a real bargain!

Hi @Swissgreys can I ask if this brand is well known where you live ( which I'm sure is Switzerland - forgive if I'm wrong) as they are made in Belgium so I'd assume they better known in mainland Europe ?
I got excited because if they are that good then that saves an awful lot of money as each bag is 500g so we buy exbow 4.5kg for £15 then for the same weight in this one we'd pay £9!
The only worry I've got it the fact that they didn't list what actual minerals they've added to these pellets. Both calcium and calcium carbonate are minerals after all :(

You're dead right - it costs £9 on Zooplus! Here's all the bumpf off of Zooplus, you got a spanking bargain :)

  • Cavia Complete is a complete and tasty food for guinea pigs, made from 100% easily digestible, extruded pellets. Each pellet contains the same balanced mixture of ingredients, which is optimally adapted to suit the nutritional physiology of guinea pigs. Selective feeding is impossible with this food.
Cavia Complete Guinea Pig Food contains no grains. This complete food also includes 20% crude fibre to aid digestion and promote a healthy intestinal flora, further supported by the added prebiotics FOS and MOS. The long fibres in these pellets also ensure natural, healthy abrasion of guinea pigs' constantly growing teeth.

    Cavia Complete at a glance:

    Dental Care
Long, whole fibres with a high level of silicate ensure maximum chewing activity and the necessary abrasion of guinea pigs' constantly growing teeth.

    Long Fibres
By nature, guinea pigs are herbivores that require a diet with a sufficiently high fibre content and a low starch content. Cavia Complete contains 20% crude fibre. A special manufacturing process produces extrudates made from long, whole, silicate-rich fibres that are also found in guinea pigs' natural diet. These long fibres support the intestinal function and dental abrasion.

    Low Calorie
The combination of low energy content, low starch content and high crude fibre content in this complete food is the ideal foundation for an easily digestible and balanced diet. With Cavia Complete, your guinea pig will maintain its ideal weight.

    Prebiotics
The addition of prebiotics, such as fructooligosaccharides (FOS), supports your pet's gut microflora and ensures optimal intestinal function.

    Vitamin Plus
The extruded pellets in Cavia Complete are supplemented with the following essential vitamins:
Vitamin C: Guinea pigs are unable to produce vitamin C in their bodies themselves. Intake of this vitamin via their food is therefore of vital importance for these small rodents. Versele-Laga Cavia Complete is enriched with 1000mg/kg stabilised vitamin C. In contrast to the crystalline form, stabilised vitamin C is much less liable to oxidation and biodegradation, meaning that it remains active for longer.
Vitamin A: For skin cell renewal, sight, reproduction and the metabolism.
Vitamin D3: For calcium/phosphorus intake and bone metabolism.
Vitamin E: An important antioxidant that protects the body against free radicals and thus supports the organism's natural resilience.

    Odour Control
The yucca extracts in this food bind the ammonia and other components that are responsible for faecal odours. In this way, these unpleasant odours are considerably reduced.

£9 for 1.75Kg? Blimey that's a lot, we went to the shop today and bought remaining stock of 4 bags. So over all we paid £4.98 for 2.5 kg! We also spoke to the owner and they said it is possible to order them for us, as long as we buy them on regular basis ( well yeah -hah! :)) and retail price for 8kg bag is £23.99 which is still cheaper than what is pay for 2x4.5 bags of oxbow ( yes 1kg extra for this )so £30... I know for 2 bags of oxbow you get 9kg and these new pellets are 8kg but that's still cheaper ... and will last us over 2 months I reckon easily (6 pigs and we don't feed them much pellets as at the end of the day their diet is balanced and rich in all they need :) so yes we maybe changing to these now AND I found this online :

So we went back to the same store and bought remaining stock of these pellets ! (Only 4 bags ) haha
I also found big bag online same price as they said they'd be in store, as they could order them for us too (£23.99)
It is a bit odd that it would seem buying 500g and multiplying it to 8kg ( so 16 bags ) would still work our cheaper that paying £23.99 for 8kg) however I also found online 500g bag for £1.61 so I think this maybe introductory offer of 99p or something ?

As £1.61 per pag 500g seems more reasonable and then for 8kg If bought individually it works over just over £25.70 so £23.99 a bit cheaper if 8kg bag bought...

Phew - my brain hurts :mal:

So let me get this right - the store is going to continue to supply this to you at 99p a bag? Who are their suppliers? How is anyone making any profit? Obvs this is good for you as it's a massive saving but it seems like someone in the chain has massively sold themselves short!

They were on 99p introductory offer in my local pet shop and I bought them out only to find the pigs wouldn't touch them. They also had the same offer for their degu, rabbit and hamster food but the store said they weren't going to re-stock as no one bought them, I'm assuming because they are an unfamiliar make for a lot of people.

No, they didn't say anything about 99p bags, we discussed the 8kg bag and the possibility of them stocking it. I asked if the 500g ones will be re-stocked and they said yes, I didn't ask about the price of the small ones doh. I assume then 8kg bag will be cheaper. Seeing prices online I conclude that £1.60 for 500g mark is more realistic and it must have been so special offer thing.
We will come
Back there soon to check anyways :)

Ok, my brain's done with thinking for the rest of the day :coat:

Yes, it makes sense. I'm now reading more and more about these and I'm lead to believe that they are potentially better quality pellets than oxbow as they have less starch ? I think these new ones have none... I did however email the manufacturer asking for more details the ingredients x
With oxbow we pay premium in U.K. For all the shopping etc, they're probably less than half price in America :(

So we came back to the pet store yesterday and they have replenished the stock with pellets AAAAAND they're still 99p per small bag so we bought whole stock out again ! :)

Bargain, I'm sure Wiebke or one of the other mods commented on them.

They commented one them as in they're not good, or good pellets ? I'm worried as I read the ingredients and it does sound good but I'm still worried because everyone is praising oxbow but one of my boys stopped eating oxbow after his abscess removal op and he does love these ones... so confusing sometimes, I checked ingredients and compared them to oxbow and they seem just as good if not better but I keep questioning myself if I did it right etc

These are good pellets they are grain free, the calcium amount is comparable to oxbow and many uk brands ,mine loved them, but ive alot of piggies and it is not cost effective for me to feed these regularly !:)

Thank you - I did think they're good so glad someone confirmed it.
I'll just keep buying out whole stock at the local store as log as it's 99p per bag as it works out cheaper than buying 8kg bag of these :)

Interesting. Going to check out my local pet shop to see if they do them. Got some grain free pellets from Zooplus but it wasnt those.

I got a couple of 500g bags of this for £1.50 each at the Bradford Champs at the weekend. Going to see what my two think :)
