Kindle is somewhere in the 4-5 months old range and came to live with me 5 days ago. It took her about 48 hours to work up the courage to leave the box I was given to carry her home in and explore her new enclosure, then it took ME another two days to realize that covering the entire floor with paper substrate was leaving me trying to sweep the stuff up and tracking it through the house 24/7, and Kindle didn't seem too comfortable swimming through it either. When I cleaned her cage last night, I took all of it out, put down a towel, and gave her a litter box full of paper in the corner where she had been doing her business almost exclusively. Oh, and where to put a very young, still rather easily startled little piggy while her enclosure is being cleaned and I can't hold her under my chin for cuddles? Why, snuggled right down in my sweater's hood with some lettuces, of course! When we finished our cuddle session and I returned her to her newly laid out enclosure, she ran about making the wheekwheek noise! She's quite taken with her new fluffy friends in there, too.

Hi and welcome to this fab friendly forum, did you know if you hook the hay rack over the litter box she will do most of her business in the litter box while she's eating her hay :)
Anything your unsure of just ask and we will do our best to advise you, we have really experienced staff members on here. It's really handy to know where in the world you live could you add your location in the profile info when you get a mo please it's often a big help when offering you advise :)
Kindle is very cute I love her colours are you going to get her a friend? Your set up looks great I use fleece on top of my towels as I didn't get on with shavings :)
Kell.

Hello, Kell! Thank you for the tip, but she doesn't seem to care for the hay box at all! I keep it in there and stocked, but the level of hay in there has barely gone down ever. She prefers her hay just sort of piled wherever I decide to stash it new every day. As for the litter pan... She chose that corner to do her business in when she started doing her business in her new home at all, and that's where she does it. Fastidious little thing, this one.

I am going to get her a friend as soon as possible! I had intended to go home with two the day I got her, but she was the last one left, and she and I just bonded instantly. So, I thought, she'd be better off having to go without pig company for a little while in a loving forever-home with someone who spoils her with pomegranate seeds for treats than in a pet shop full of chaos with a messy substrate floor and a see-through dome that gives her no real place to hide. :)

She's beautiful. Welcome to the forum. Hopefully you will be able to find her the perfect friend in time, she is young enough to hopefully bond ok.

Wow, Washington :) I don't think ive seen a member on here from Washington dc before :) Its just a help knowing where you are incase you ask for advice, with members from across the world advise can differ thanks for adding that.
That all sounds good, it's what works best for you and your piggy at the end of the day but having fresh hay 24/7 is all that matters where ever it is :)
I have a litter tray in my boys bedroom too as they poop in a corner up there too so I know how handy they are having them in the most used corners it saves lots of washing ha ha.
That's good that kindle is going to have a friend I hope you didn't think I was being rude by asking it's just some new members don't know they really should have a friend as they are sociable amimals but you did so thats great. Keep us posted on how kindle gets on and remember unsure just ask we will do our best to help :)

Hi and welcome!

What a little sweetie!

You can place her favourite hidey in a laundry basked lined with a cheap towel and a handful of hay to nibble on during the cage clean.

Here are some threads that you may find interesting and helpful:

It would be great if you considered getting Kindle a friend in the longer term; guinea pigs are group animals and not really wired to be kept on their own. You, in turn, will certainly enjoy the vocal interaction that makes guinea pigs so unique!

You are lucky in that the Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue is also covering DC and can help you find the perfect partner for Kindle, whether it is another sow or a neutered boar. http://www.mgpr.org/

Vet cost are very high in the US. It would be good if you could lay by some money every week so you can afford vet care at any time. Emergency and illness never happen at a convenient time!

Welcome to the forum :) Kindle is such a cool name and she is a real pretty girlie

I would advise you to start looking at other types of bedding as guineas can get their claws caught in the loops on towels.

Ohh woops, ive just read this and I have been using towels for my guinea pigs cage, just shows I am still learning and still not read up on everything yet, so that's a change ive got to do. :mal::oops:

Aww she is soooo cute! What a cuddly sweetheart. :luv:

Hm.. I seem to have posted this 4 months ago and then forgotten about this place entirely without ever saying another word after a few replies early on here! Mea culpa!

A very belated thank you to everyone for the welcoming attitude and good advice... and another introduction!

This sweet child is 4-week-old Nook, who came home with me this past weekend and is presently serving her time in quarantine while she adjusts to her new home. Hopefully they'll get along when I introdce them and she will become a companion for Kindle... though I guess I should have thought harder about naming them after competitor devices if I wanted to really ensure a good chance of that happening smoothly... ;)
