Really excited - just picked up a beautiful new guinea pig. He is a very handsome, black Abyssinian and we are calling him Michaelangelo - Mikey for short.

I wanted to ask if anyone has any advice for Abyssinians (we haven't had one before ). Also, he is a rescue pig and hasn't had a good time - was kept in a very small cage with lots of other boars. He was bullied and has (healing) bite marks all over his rear end. We are going to go very slowly with handling ,so as not to scare him, but any other advice about dealing with a rather traumatised piglet would be gratefully received. We have two slightly older girls who we are going to introduce him to (again slowly and no direct contact for 4 weeks as he has only just been neutered) - again any advice would be great.

I also wanted to recommend the Blue Cross in Burford where we got him from - they neutered him and were so helpful.

It takes six weeks before a neutered boar can be introduced to sows. I have any any and he does not need any different treatment to my others.

Thanks - I will up that to 6 weeks - don't want any babies

Sounds like poor Mikey has had a rubbish start in life but things are looking up for him. I've never found that abys need any different care than other piggies. My abys have always been real characters but I don't know if that's just coincidence. I'd agree with keeping him apart from your girls for the whole six weeks. Otherwise it can result in an unwanted surprise pregnancy which could be dangerous for your girls if they are older and haven't delivered before. I hope that he enjoys his new home with you all.

Glad Mikey's troubles are over now that he has found a good home with you. I bet he'll be over the moon when he gets to live with the girlies & it will make up for the rubbish part of his life.

We fostered 2 Abyssinian boars over Christmas & New Year, and found them once they got to know you, were the most cheeky lovable chaps. Don't forget the pigtures... :ple:
