New Piggie

United States.

You read my mind. I literally had the same thought about lying to say that I own him to get him checked/clipped.

As hard as it sounds. I absolutely would not do that.
It is absolutely awful that nobody seems to be able to give that piggy veterinary care and I do not think that this situation sounds fair at all, but are you willing to potentially get into trouble with the law by lying? I’d speak to the shelter and find out the exact situation surrounding all of this.
If there is going to be a (court) case, then surely professionals should have taken photos of his condition to show in any potential legal case (Thereby meaning there is evidence of his state even after his condition is cleaned up and treated?)

Yes I agree that you perhaps shouldn’t break the law, but the law is ridiculous (as are many here in the UK) The piggies welfare should come first in these situations. You are doing a great job, don’t beat yourself up!

I would weigh him everyday at the same time, this will give an indication of how much he is eating. If his weight is stable (within 20-30 grams per day) and not on a downward track then he is getting enough food, write the date and how much he weighs down on a sheet of paper so you can see an indication of how his weigh evolves over a couple of weeks. Try to keep his food as normal as possible as this will help his teeth from over growing too much. Try him with all the normal food stuffs, grate or cut into small sticks and hand feed if necessary, cut up his hay and try pellets dry, if he struggles then soak them first. Porridge oats (soaked or dry) are great to fatten up piggies and grated parsnip and sweet potato. You are doing well, don’t loose heart, his teeth may grow back fairly soon, he may have suffered some trauma that’s knocked his teeth out, if he is eating it’s a good sign, try get him seen by a vet ASAP and ask the rescue to take photos if this is a cruelty case

Hi!

Of course I wouldn't literally break the law. I was just giving my personal thoughts about this situation. The shelter has been asking for photos of him and what kind of veggies he's been eating. I just feel bad that I can't clip his nails because they are already long. They said the only job I have to do is providing food, water and making sure the cage is clean...

Update: Thanks for all the encouraging comments. He's doing great! I've been stuffing his hay rack with handfuls of hay throughout the day and he's been eating it like a normal guinea pig with teeth would. Since he doesn't drink water from a bottle, I figured out that I have to put water out in a small bowl for him. I've seen him drink out of it which is a good sign. He's also been eating veggies, as long as I cut them up for him in small squares. I also have to soak his pellets in water because they are hard for him to chew. I tried giving him cilantro the other day to see how he would do with that because it's soft, but he wasn't able to eat it. I'm just going to have to cut up veggies into dices for him and keep checking his water throughout the day.

I'm not sure! They said I can't even clip the pigs nails, and they are so long. So, I'm only supposed to feed and give it water only to watch his health decline...?
Il get stick for this, but I'd ignore the state, say he passed away, and keep him then go vets. I'd honestly do that. What's the point rescuing an abdondoned pet and then further neglecting him ( not you ofcourse)

I might just adopt him so I can bring him to the vets.

Yea that would be the safest way, sorry about my previous reply, I would do it at a last resort, but I don't want you getting in trouble. I've been in a similar situation before, rescuing two boars from a school that were being neglected, and I was plotting and planning insane things to get them, luckily in the end I just took them home for the summer holidays and they forgot about them coming back.

No worries, I thought it was clever lol. I am the type of person to do that though if the pig really needed to be brought to the vet in an emergency. My parents are considering about letting me adopt him, so that's good. I just don't want to see this pig end up getting adopted to someone and not take care of him the way I have been.
