We brought two piggies into our home two days ago. Meant to be six weeks of age but have weighed them and one is 260g and the other being 350g. Seem to be eating fine and perky but should I be worried? I still haven't seen them drink any water but they've had some cucumber.

I worry re things like mites and fungus etc after reading up on it all so we are booking an appt with a vet next week for a check over to give me piece of mind, would hate to start off on the wrong foot!
They are interacting well and have let the kids hold them

:wel: to the forum . I'm no expert in guinea pig weights so it isn't fair for me to comment . Guinea pigs often get the majority of water they need form their food - especially if they eat things like cucumber . I doubt you have anything to worry about but I always take my new guinea pigs to the vet for a check up - just to be on the safe side.

Hello and welcome to the forum

Baby weights do vary considerably (as do adult piggy weights) but I would agree that an early vet health check will put your mind at rest.

As we have members from all over the world, we find it very helpful if you please added your country and county, so we can adapt any advice accordingly. Please click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. In the same section you can also upload your avatar, that is the picture that appears with every post you make. Thank you!

Sorry!

Hi and welcome

As long as your babies gain weight steadily over the next weeks, there is nothing to worry about.

It is however a good idea to have a vet check done. At their small size, they are rather on the young side and won't have a fully developed immune system or physical sturdiness yet, so they are somewhat more susceptible to opportunists like mange mites, fungal or other bugs if they have been exposed to them at the breeders or the shop.

You may find our guides at the top of our various Care sections helpful, but you are always welcome to ask any questions you have along the way in there.

Shop baby guinea pigs have often not yet learned from their elders how to drink from a bottle, so they have to figure it out by themselves eventually. Most will do. As long as they get fluid from vegetables, they won't dehydrate, so don't worry.

You may find our new owners' information bundle on a range of subjects helpful in settling in your little ones and learning to understand them. The bundle also contains links to recommended piggy savvy vets.

This is my worry and concern so hopefully I can get an appt when I call on Monday, I'm not seeing visible signs sore or bald patches but I'm taking them anyway and if they have any of the above, treatment can begin.

Piggies have their vet appt tomorrow, if they have mites or what not then I can make sure it's treated straight away. I'm not seeing any scratching or seeing anything other than a teeny weeny bit of dandruff on the one teddy but I'd rather be safe than sorry with them being so small.

Just weighed them and little Chester is now 279g and Arvie is 370g

Took Yarvie and Chester to the vets today and he wasn't concerned by anything and said he couldn't find anything that might say mites or fungus. Checked they were both boys and wasn't worried by their weight.

It was a vets that had been mentioned on here rather than the 10 or so more local ones! Lol
