we had two boy guinea pigs in the past and they peed everywhere, not toilet trained at all which was no a problem to us, they are now passed over the rainbow bridge,

my husband got me two more boy guinea pigs for my birthday last week which i am delighted about as i wanted more guineas, they are 13 weeks old and we noticed that they are peeing in one area which out others never did so we are contemplating getting a potty for them to see if they would carry on, this is all new to us, if anyone else has been in the same sitation can they give us any advice ?

also we are using wood shavings for there bedding but really swaying on using fleece but have no idea if this is a good idea, we just used wood shavings with others but feel it might be better health wise for them, has any one got any recommendations

Hello

I am not sure it is possible to toilet train pigs :)) They tend to poo everywhere - however they we tend to notice they poo more where they eat - like hay for instance. Our girls spend a lot of time in the hay and there are far more poo's down there than anywhere else.

However wee.... it is everywhere in our cage :)

We have just switched over to fleece the past month or so and are converts :) Have a read of the bedding overview thread here

Congrats on your new boys by the way, be lovely to see some pigtures :)

Well, boys will be boys, they'll pee and poo everywhere and anywhere and generally trash the place! (most of the time) :)) Your new additions sound like they had a very good upbringing, I've always had boys and not one of them have I ever toilet trained successfully. However, they are bloomin good at cuddles and kisses  Many many congratulations on your additions to your family, your hubby sounds very thoughtful :) x

My two little sows have favorite areas. While once in awhile they let a poop go somewhere else, they prefer pooping in their "bedrooms," cuddle cups in corners, and their kitchen.

If I move a cuddle cup away from a corner, it is no longer used as a bathroom. Corners seem to be essential.

My two sows pee mainly in their 32 litre litter tray which has a hemp based bedding from zooplus called hemparade and lots of hay. They do millions of poos in their hidies and near their water bowl and by any food that i put down for them.

They are on fleece and have lots of extra mats that i use in addition to the cage liners. I sew them all by hand myself and it is fun chosing the colours!

I put them in an indoor run each day whilst i clean the cage. Shake out the mats and liners and spot clean the litter tray. Full clean and cage liner change every 3 or 4 days. Their cage is a 150 x 75cm cage. A bigger cage would not need a full clean as often.

Thanks for all your input, seriously thinking about getting fleeces and swapping over from the wood shavings
