Long story short…I have ended up taking in a friends daughters piggies as she wasn’t looking after them well. Got them today and they are long haired…..I have no idea what to do with them! I’ve had short haired piggies since a child but no idea what to do with these little ones….any advice RE grooming etc appreciated!
Also can’t work out how to post a photo so someone can advise on breed!

:wel:

Well done for taking them in.

I have a long haired piggy.
He needs to be brushed frequently (I just use a soft baby hair brush) to stop matts forming.
I keep his hair around his bottom and back legs cut short. The hair on his side is kept short enough that it doesn’t drag on the floor.
In summer, he gets an all over hair cut to stop him from getting too hot

Thankyou so much! It was a bit of a shock to see long haired piggies but they are super cute and so excited to have space to roam, which makes me happy!do you just cut his hair yourself?

Yes I do cut it myself. It’s not easy though - he doesn’t like being handled, won’t co-operate, has wised onto my bribery with coriander plan (he takes one stem, realises ive tricked him into sitting still and then refuses to eat anymore!). It usually takes several sittings to get all of his hair cut.

Hahah they are sneaky ! Il have to see how much they hate handling I guess….

Hi and welcome!

Don't set yourself too high an aim at first and just concentrate on cutting out the worst of the mats, especially round the bum. ;)

A lot has changed in the piggy world in terms of diet, housing and care over the last decade so you may find our new Owners information collection very helpful and also rather interesting as we cover every thing from diet, housing, extreme weather care (heat waves!) to life long health monitoring, behaviour and species information as well as information on illess care and recommended vets with a little course in piggy whispering thrown in.
Here is the access link, which you may want to bookmark, browse, read and re-read at need. It is one of the most comprehensive information resources currently available: Getting Started - New Owners' Most Helpful Guides

I have a long haired piggie too. Posh gets a trim with my OH beard trimmer in late spring and a regular brush around every couple of days. her hair is quite short in the photo, she is just beginning to grow her coat for winter!

Welcome to the forum.
Your piggies are very lucky to have found a new home with you.
I have a long haired girl who can be a bit of a diva so she’s had some interesting fur trims over the years ( she’s 4).
Sometimes she will only let me do about half before she’s had enough.
As has been said - don’t stress about it.

Update on the hairy ones, fur is very very matted and very close to their skin and me faffing was clearly causing pain so I’m hoping to take them to the vets tomorrow to see what they can do…hopefully they can shave the areas and maybe give me a grooming master class. Poor little beans

Aw, that’s a good idea, vet nurses are so used to dealing with hair mats and they have the perfect trimmers and shavers too. Your little hairy ones are gorgeous x

Yep and gives me a chance to have them looked over generally. I know they originally came from Pets at Home so a health check is probably sage
