Hello I'm a new pig owner and for the 2 days I've had my pig he hasn't touched his water bottle. He eats fine but won't come out of his house even if I offer a lot of lettuce. I tried taking him out of his house once and he came without trying to get away and almost fell asleep on my lap. I think he's scared and is getting used to his surroundings still but not drinking is concerning.

If anyone can help thanks.

Can an admin please put this as a thread in its own right? Thankyou

Hi @Guianapig27 I have set your post up with its own thread.

Please take the time to read our helpful guide to settling in a new piggy How Do I Settle Shy New Guinea Pigs?

I would avoid all handling for a few days. Please do not offer large amounts of lettuce, it has little nutritional content and can cause tummy upsets. Please leave hay, water and food (pellets and veggies) next to the house so he can eat without coming out into the open. Piggies feel very vulnerable and like to stay hidden at first. Does he have plenty of places to hide?
Also is he alone? Solo piggies feel very frightened on first arrival. Piggies do best in pairs.

It's very normal for new pigs to hide. Their first new instinct in a scary new place is to stay under cover. Put the food and water as close as you can to his hiding spot so that he doesn't have to venture into the open. It's also very possible that he is venturing out at night when all is quiet to eat and drink (I know one of my pigs only moved at night for the first week or so- she was a cautious girl!) Some guinea pigs don't drink very much under the best of circumstances, so it's probably that he is getting enough even without you noticing the water volume changing.

If he is having veg he will be getting some fluid that way. Also you could offer him water in a bowl close to his hidey so he doesn't have to venture to the side of the cage to find it.

Hi there, he should be fine, though l wouldn't give him to much lettuce as it could upset his tummy,
An inch of cucumber, 2 times a day together with a 1 inch wide slice of red bell pepper will give him sufficient moisture untill he gets use to his water bottle
