Hi all, I’m a new piggy owner, got a 4month old little Abyssinian piggy , I noticed about a week ago that he has white like dry crusty build up on his nose , that looks like alittle cracked and all , I have not much experience with piggies , does anybody have an idea what this sounds like ?

Thank you so much , I think I will have to go there . I did visit the vet when I first noticed it the vet gave me something that she said would clean it and that it was for fungal infections and some skins infections but then it just doesn’t look ok to me anymore . I think I’ll just go back to the vet . What’s worse is this little one was scratching it and made a wound , gosh I’m worried . Thank you so much

It does very much sound like ringworm. This normal starts on the nose. Though hard to tell with just a description.
You need to visit a vet for treatment and diagnosis and take precautions like wearing gloves while you handle him.
Best of luck x

Hi!

PLease have your piggy vet checked for highly infectious ringworm. You can reclaim the the vet cost from the pet shop if you have it seen and treated within a certain country-specific time frame. Please DO NOT home treat on spec. We can only guess from your description, we cannot diagnose and replace a hands-on vet visit.
Take the time to read this guide. It explains your customer rights and contains a list of the most common problems new piggies that are not from a good standard rescue with mandatory quarantine can come from: What to check and look out for in new guinea pigs (vet checks, sexing, parasites&illness)

Please save up for a vet fund as part of the weekly living spending on your piggy. Guinea pigs have an average lifetime of 5-7 years and generally need to see a vet sooner or later. Emergencies and illness never happen at a convenient time. Because guinea pigs are small animals, they cannot wait until you can scrape the money together. Please be aware that there are no cheap pets and that a serious illness can cost you hundreds of pounds or dollars.

Hi all an update on the issue with my little piggy, I am so sad and worried , I went back to the vet and was told it is fungal and was given an anti-fungal cream , I started to apply and the area started to look pink and sort of like healing , I hope , but then there was one part one his little nose on which it looked like there was a thick like scab , ( I hope I’m describing it alright ) and then my piggy scratched it off and it left a wound now I am wondering what to do next , I just started to cry , please help , how do I keep it from being infected ? What should I use to clean the wound ?would it be ok to still apply the cream ? When is the right time to bath my piggy his only 4 months and it is winter here very cold , the other is 5 months , which shampoo is best to use for this fungal problem please help?i am so sad please help

Hi!

Please carefully read the advice in this guide here. Please be aware that creaming is not efficient for ringworm as it does not prevent the spread of spores and further outbreaks. Ringworm is the most infective and transmittable problem you will ever come up against.

The second part of our ringworm guide is showing you pictures of how ringworm runs its due course. This includes scabs coming off. The open area is just the very surface layer and will heal over in a day, so please do not panic.

Please follow our hygiene tips to the letter (including fungal baths for your guinea pigs and yourself) to prevent any further outbreaks.
Here is the link to our very detailed ringworm care guide. The tips in it REALLY work! Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

Thank you so very much . Very very informative , educational and helpful . There is a lot I did not know and will definately follow word for word. However I am still unclear on the issue of bathing my piggies . They are 4 and 5 months old can I bath them in any of the recommended shampoos or dips ? Thank you so much again

Hi everyone thank you all so much for your kind advice . An update on my little one the wound closed up and has left him bald around the nose area, his bare skin showing but no cracked crustiness anymore and he is not scratching anymore . Once again thank you ever so much I was really worried now I am hoping this is the road to recovery. I am following every step in the guide regarding the cleaning of his little bed and environment to avoid it coming back . Thank you all 👍
