Hi everyone

On tuesday my first Piggies are arriving, I am taking them in as a re-home. I will be having a Mum Dad (now neutered) and their daughter. I am also getting their current home and run too. I am so excited and can't wait for them to arrive. I currently have 5 bunnies but have never had Guinea Pigs before.

I have a couple of questions I am hoping you can assit me with.

They are currently on P@H nuggets but I was wondering what would be the best food to give them and how do I go about changing over?

How easy would it be to add 3 baby pigs to the current herd? Unsure of the sexes at the mo but if I don't have them a school where they will be going so I thought it best to offer them a home with me. Also once they are grown what size area would I need for 6?

Can you insure piggies?

Thats it for now but I am sure their will be more questions to follow.

Hi! Welcome to the forum.

Good on you for researching before you are getting your piggies!

You need 2x5 ft minimum ground space for three guinea pigs and 2x8 ft for six, provided the three babies are all girls. Any boys need to be kept separate from three weeks old (this is the age when the early ones can already start fathering the generation already!)

Have a look in our cage and hutch gallery for creative C&C cages for bigger groups (best start at the end). We have permanent threads at the top of each section which give you information.

We also have a range of informative threads that aim to answer the most frequently asked questions in our reference section.

You can get insurance (look for exotic animals), but we usually recommend to set aside a certain amount of money in a "piggy bank" account, as that will cover anything the vets throw at you in an emergency.

Personally, I feed Burgess Excel (also available in P@H), but there are other brands. As long as you go with a good quality one, you will be fine. Shift your piggies on your new brand slowly and gradually. Too many changes in diet can upset their digestive system, as they have to cope with the stress of a new home as well.

Please post in the appropriate section if you have more questions, but be aware that it is weekend and that we are all normal people with a normal life on here.

Good luck getting your new additions settled.

My girls are fed P@H nuggets too and seem to love them :) If you want to change, do it gradually to avoid any upset tummies ;)

If any of the babies turn out to be boys, they are very likely to fight with Dad over the girls (even once neutered - it doesn't have an effect on character like it does with other animals, dogs for example, just stops their ability to have babies), so you're better to keep them seperate from the others.

Let us know how you get on and shout if you have any questions.

Oh, and don't forget some photos once they've settled in ;)
