Hi all,

So as some of you may know about 3 weeks ago we lost Neville because of pneumonia. This left behind little Bertie who at first seemed quite forlorn and withdrawn. We added a little guinea pig toy and some big fluffy socks and immediately his mood improved a lot. He always ate (nothing stops him eating) and was soon back to squeaking when he heard rustling packets etc.

We thought lots about getting a second pig for Bert. We didn't want to upset him but ultimately we felt it was cruel to allow him to live on without a friend. We were booked in to take Bert to a piggy rescue where he was going to stay the night but the weather was unbearably hot that day and within 15 minutes of being in the car we had to turn around and come back home. I think we were actually lucky he survived the trip. A car without AC is not great.

Rather than wait a third week we decided to go to Pets at Home and choose a piggy from there. His name is Wilbur and he's incredibly cute and full of energy. He charges around the cage whilst Bert just looks at him. After a lengthy introduction involving lots of chasing from Bert and attempted humping this soon dissipated and the two piggies were eating together and cleaning themselves. We then decided to put them in their cage. Since then there's been lots of rumble strutting and teeth chattering from both pigs including some small nips to each other's chin and mouth areas. Nothing serious as far as we're concerned but something to keep an eye on.

We came home the other day to find Bertie was eating with his head tilted to one side. On closer inspection we realised his ear has been ripped quite badly with some blood over his fur and face. We presume Wilbur did this but obviously not sure on the context and whether they were full on fighting etc. We've given Bert some Metacam and Baytril and today he looks much better (he even let me take a closer look at his ear).

They are due to be moved into their new cage at the weekend after I've put the ramps in and the paint has had a decent time to dry. They will have more space and more hideys and we're going to get a second bowl and water bottle to hopefully calm things down. We're hoping that Wilbur is just going through his testosterone phase and that he'll calm down in the next month or so, we're not sure.

What would you guys do in this situation? There is a lot of information on here regarding biting but this seems to just cover smaller nips and bites. Is there anything else we can do apart from monitor them? Worst case scenario we split their new cage up through the middle but I really don't want to have to do that. It seems a shame on Wilbur if all he think he's doing is playing.

Thanks for your help

I wouldn't be inclined to try it again once blood has been drawn. @Wiebke thoughts?

My two boys got in a fight where blood was drawn, nothing terrible just little nips, luckily they were neutered and a few days away from being put with my girls. I separated them and now they each live with a female or two. Our AC went out about a week ago so I had to move them to the basement in a temporary cage. Kristoff got over the wall I put between them and did this to Olaf’s ear. It had been a few months since they had been in contact with each other, so I definitely know that they can’t be together. Maybe you could keep yours separate and when the weather gets cooler, take them both to the rescue to find a buddy each.E5FDF342-3FEA-4D38-ABC0-1FBC8E6FFA6B.webp

Hi! Take your cue from how the boys deal with other. If it was an accident, they will still be relaxed with each other; if it was the result of a full-on tussle, there should be some tension and bad blood between them. You progress accordingly. Give them some roaming or lawn time together tonight in order to observe how they interact.
Keep in mind that the bonding process lasts around 2 weeks and that boar bonds with youngsters can fail at the last minute.

Please have the ear vet checked. It looks rather nasty!

Thank you for the replies. Bert's ear looks pretty much like that in your pic HeatherRose :( it is healing well though and he'll probably let us tend to it tonight.

I think there has always been tension between them since they were put into the cage and I'm sure the warmer weather doesn't help. We'll give them some floor time tonight and see how it goes. Thanks Wiebke.

Have the oven gloves and a carrier at the ready in case they have another go!

Best of luck, I had similar happen when I tried to introduce Phoebe into the group (so sows can be as bad) I hope they chose to get along

Here is Olaf’s ear now, it is almost all healed and he didn’t have any problems luckily. I guess it will just add to his charm.

Poor Olaf. He looks lovely though all the same.

Would you mind me asking what dosage of Baytril/Metacam you gave him after it happened? Bert has had 2 x 0.4ml so far (once a day). I think what is bothering him more is that his hairs have become stuck in the wound. He wouldn't let us near it last night to clean it at all :(

Thank you

It's a hard call to know if youre two are bonding. Wiebke has mentioned fantastic advise and id say to watch these two.
Once blood has been drawn it usually a no and try something else.
Have you put them together but a barrier across to stop actual contact. I'd see if they take a intrest in each other.
Best of luck.

Hi David Pet Lover. We gave them some floor time yesterday and they behaved impeccably. Bert was popcorning around on the rug and helping himself to hay. Wilbur was zooming around and getting up to mischief. They are much better when there is plenty of space. I think because the Furplast cage has dead ends they get on each other's nerves and can't run away from one another.

I'll be making and installing the ramps tonight in their new cage. Hopefully come the weekend they'll be in there and much happier. Until then we'll give them plenty of floor time so they can stretch their legs. If this still doesn't work then we'll divide the new cage as you say and see what happens.

I called my vet when it happened and he said as long as there is no swelling or redness, he didn’t need any antibiotics. I cleaned it when it happened and a few hours later, it had a nice scab over it so I just watched it after that and when the scab fell off, it looked fine. Olaf lives with his mom and another female and I noticed his mom Elsa licking it a lot the day it happened, momma’s kisses always make everything better lol!

That's really cute. No way Bert is getting an kisses from Wilbur. At least not when we're around anyway!

We'll check it again tonight for swelling and redness. Thanks again.

Just a little update. We put both piggies into their new cage so they could get used to things. They seemed to enjoy it and soon after eating Bert settled down and stretched out. Wilbur was zooming everywhere but eventually settled into one of the corners. Here is a picture.

They seem a lot better with one another when there's more space. Bert's ear seems to have scabbed up quite well and he let us treat it with saline solution without too much fuss. I think he knew he was getting spinach as a reward. We did however notice another a very small mark on his mouth. The two of them are clearly winding each other up. I just hope they settle down with one another.

Make sure that you can split the cage if necessary, so they can stay in contact with a see-through and ideally touch noses divider for mutual stimulation and interaction.

Just a quick update. The pigs are in their new home with towels and fleeces. No more sawdust, I'm sure Bert has allergies so hopefully this will help him. They seem to really like it but I need to put another hidey or two in for them. I'm thinking about about putting one in each corner so they both have something to retreat to. Do you guys think this would be a good idea? I'd make them with two entrances so that neither can get cornered/trapped inside.

Also, Wilbur has been humping Steve (the stuffed toy) a lot. And by a lot, I mean a lot! He bites his ears and licks him and then falls asleep resting on him. Whilst it's quite cute I'm concerned there's a little bit too much humping. Is this a good thing and just his way of getting things out of his system?
