It is now five weeks since Spike's sex change and I have have been meaning to show support for her new gender identity by replacing her blue cosy with a pink cosy. Here is the result of my labour:

If Spike could speak, I think she may say, 'I want the blue one back'.

:)), how is she getting on?

Is she pregnant? Do you know yet?

Thanks for asking. I thought she definitely was because she put on about 70g per week and looked really big for the first three weeks after the separation but she hasn't put any weight on since. I am now wondering if she was just putting weight on because he was no longer hogging all of the food so she was getting more of it.

I asked a friend (who had 2 'pet shop pregnant' piggies a few years ago) and she thought that she was too but that was a few weeks ago. We are hoping that she isn't pregnant after all but we need to know for definite as she is due for her 'reunion' with the boar in two weeks.

How long have you had her for now? You should be able to see signs and weight gain from 5-7 weeks onwards if she was pregnant. High weight gain connected to pregnancy happens in the second half of the pregnancy and not especially the first.

PS: I love the pink cosy, but I can understand Spike's misgivings - it won't smell right! :)

We have had her since April 1st but we only discovered she was a girl and separated her from the 'other' boar five weeks ago. Based on what you say above, if she got pregnant on the last day they were together, she could have 5 weeks left to go and so we still may not be sure in two weeks time.

Your boar can join Milo playing the waiting game :)).

How long does Milo have left?

My boar is desperate to get at Spike. He has been over the top of a C & C grid and managed to push his way under as well. He did not get a good reception either time. Despite that, he spends hours chewing at the grid and rumbling at her.

You should be definitely able to feel lumps in two weeks' time! Right now, Spike should already show increased thirst, increasing weight gain and the very beginnings of lumps in her belly. You may also see her nipples elongate and swell up.

If you are still not sure, I would recommend booking Spike in for a check at your vets before you reintroduce her to her mate.

Lovely piggy and cosy. x)

Have you considered Spike having an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy (or not)?

love the cosy
where did you get it?
I feel the urgent need to buy 4 . . .:))

You have just made my day! I made it myself. She kept walking on top of the first one I made and squashing it so I made this one to hang from the top of the cage so she couldn't.

It cost about 25p to make.

I did not know that such things were available for piggies! I think I will wait for two weeks to see if it becomes more obvious. I am guessing that an ultrasound would be quite expensive so I would only go down that route if there were problems.

Would a human pregnancy test work on piggy urine?

Ooh! I love Spike's new cosy - very impressed! :)

She's such a lovely girl. I'm not surprised your little guy is impatient to welcome her back!

No idea about piggy pregnancy test but would like to see you following Spike round and waving the stick under her bum. :))

I only found out that ultrasound were possible this week because one of the rescue piggies had one... but I think it was mainly to confirm a kidney problem as well as pregnancy. I would also wait in your situation and see if things develop...

How much did it cost?

I gave up and made her a new blue cosy. It was almost unbelieveable. The moment I had hung it up, she left the pink cosy and went straight into the blue one and has not left it since. Maybe she is a tomboar or actually wanted to stay a boar and doesn't like her new gender identity?:))

So what if I prefer blue!pow-pow

My Spike (he's a boy) had an ultrasound and it cost about £40, I think that price included an x ray as he had it done at the same time when the x ray showed no bladder stone they did an ultrasound to see if they could spot any problems as well. No GA needed.
P.S Loving the cozy! I saw the picture and thought, here's my next challenge to work out how to make one of them! Only problem is his house doesn't have a roof so I don't know how to make it stay up!
