I only brought home our new guy Monday, but on Tuesday I noticed that his junk seemed to have a few bits of fur stuck on it... a few articles and videos later, I learned about cleaning anal sacs! Did it for the first time tonight using coconut oil as a lubricant/loosener and everything came off nicely, and he didn't have too much yuck in there.

Here's my question: how often do you clean your boar's bottom? My guy is 13 months and neutered (though I don't think he knows he is, he doesn't act neutered). He didn't have a big mess, but there definitely were multiple q-tips used. Is this something I should check weekly, monthly, what?

The pigs live on fleece, and they get spot-cleaned daily, but of course, they lay around in their waste in between me scooping it out. How dirty can he get?

You clean your boars as much as needed; some are messier than others, so there is no firm rule. We recommend a weekly check to see how bad things are, but the worst offenders may need to be tended to more often. Keep any long hairs that can get matted around the genitals and legs cut short.

Thank you so much, Wiebke, you have been such a fantastic source for me and my pigs. When we went to get our new boy it was commented on how clean and healthy my girls were! Thanks for all of this support! You're the best!

PS: Neutering only takes away the ability to makes babies and over the time the anal sac, which is caused by descended testicles will shrink again. Otherwise, neutered boars behave in any way like full boars, including generating amazing volumes of testosterone laden pee when they meet girls for the first time. I've just been through that myself with my 'super stinky' new husboar Pioden. Neutered boars also still go through the teenage months just the same, as so neatly demonstrated by my little Nye, who is living with a boar companion, but in a room full of sows so I can't risk any accidental in unplanned meetings.
