Hi I've had my 2 boars for 1 month they are approx 10 weeks old and one seems to have dry flaky skin on and around the ear. He has been receiving daktarin antifungal cream twice a day for 2 weeks on vet advice which I have now stopped but the flaky white skin has come straight back. Not sure if it's ringworm as doesn't look like the typical pics I've seen on line and vet was uncertain. It looks like white stain on ear and dandruff around the base doesn't seem to bother him much and other g.pig has no sign of it thankfully. Wondered if it was just dry skin and to use olive oil on it. Anyone got any advice?

Hi and welcome!

Can you please post a picture? it sounds like fungal to me, to be honest, and daktarin cream may not be enough to treat it.

Welcome to the forum to you and your boys! Definitely do what Wiebke says and have a look at those links too!

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to go back to vets tomorrow as he seemed aggravated tonight and was running around like a bucking bronco as if something was really bothering him. I think maybe mites?! I'm no good with technology so can't really put a photo on here but have read through links thanks. Just wish I knew for sure what it is so could get rid of it.

Fingers crossed that the vet can help diagnose the problem, and it is something that is easy to treat.

Crossing my fingers too for a diagnosis! Keep us updated with what they say x

Been doing some research about shampoos for future preventative measures and this may sound stupid but how do you dry the g.pigs? I'd hate them to be cold as they live outside but can't imagine them tolerating a hairdryer they'd be terrified. Reading the links I think it's fungal as greasy hair around area and tide marks on ear. Will see if can get a dip from vets tomorrow.

You let a dip dry on the skin. Make sure that you guinea pigs are indoors out of drafts and swaddled in some towels; keep them distracted with some grass, hay or other treats. If necessary (not at this time of the year), half heat a snugglesafe, but always give them the chance to move off if they feel too warm.

Thanks for all the advice. Vet has advised 2 more weeks of daktarin cream to ear and surrounding area and then see what it's like then. Just one more question. I've seen some advice on here about baths and shampoos for g.pigs. is this a good idea for future prevention and skin care? And if so how do you dry them? Towel dry? I'm just worried about them being damp and cold.

I had to bath my two tonight as possible fungal starting, I rubbed them gently with a towel then left them to air dry in their indoor run.. It was very warm today so that helped... They were still slightly damp when I put them back in their c&c cage (indoor)..

Baths won't prevent fungal; normally a healthy immune system will keep most opportunistic issues at bay.

We recommend them mostly only if medically necessary and or if your guinea pig is really filthy. In most cases, a gentle bum bath will do the trick.
