HI,
I HAVE JUST JOINED THE FORUM, I HAVE TWO GUINEA PIGS, ONE IS AT THE VETS, SHE GOT WHAT APPEARED TO BE AN EYE INFECTION, THE VET EXAMINED POPPY, AND HER OPTIC NERVE WAS DAMAGED, HAD SOME FORM OF GROWTH.
YESTERDAY SHE HAD TO HAVE HER EYE REMOVED, SHE IS 3 YEARS OLD, AND WAS DOING WELL AFTER THE INITIAL OPERATION
THE VET GAVE HER BAYTRIL ANTIBIOTIC HAS SHE GOT AND INFECTION,
SHE IS NO LONGER EATING OR DRINKING, SHES CURRENTLY STAYING AT THE VETS OVER WEEKEND FOR OBSERVATION,
I HAVE HAD GUINEA PIGS FOR MANY YEARS AND AFTER THE ANTIBIOTIC IS PERSCRIBED AND USED, THEY GO DOWN HILL AND DIE.
SHOULD I USE A PROBIOTIC?
DALLAS

Hi and welcome!

Please start syringe feeding and watering her asap. It is important to keep her guts going and her weight up.
Baytril is well known for being an appetite killer; you can add a pinch of probiotic to the syringe feed twice daily, but it is not going to be enough to kick-start her appetite again. I would also recommend to mix the baytril with ribena (UK) or fruit juice to the same amount as the antibiotic, so it goes down better.
Our step-by-step syringe feeding guide also contains tips on what you can do with what you have got a home in an emergency, as well as how much/how often you need to feed. Your care can make all the difference.

The good news is that guinea pigs can live a perfectly happy normal life once they have adjusted to the loss of their sight. Please do not approach and handle them from their blind side, though. They usually hate being startled.

I don't really have anything to add except my Tim only has one eye and he isn't affected by it at all apart from occasionally wheeking in the wrong direction.

please read the rules of this group, it says not to use block capitals when righting :) also I wouldn't use anything unless a vet tells you too x

I know you mean no harm @my4piggies but the rules also say that members who aren't staff members should not Chastise members privately or publicly. ;)
