pigspigspigs!

Hello, I am new to G pigs, although alwasy wanted one when I was little, many of my friends had them. I currently keep rats mice and hamsters, but my rats are moving into a new cage this sunday, meaning I will have my Tommy T3 cage free :)) So I was playing with the idea of getting some little pigs! I think I'm right in thinking my T3 is originally designed for pigs and rabbits, what do people think? Would it be okay for a pair or possibly a trio? Also, I'm not quite sure on what pigs like to "play" with, apart from chewing and tubes. Obviously theyre not as agile or able to climb as my rats so just interested in what people use as in cage entertainment. They will get runs in the large garden(wish I could find a bigger outside run on the market). I live in rented flat, but with massive lawned garden:) Also will get runs around the rodent room :) Also, which gender get on better in pairs/trio's? I don't really have a preference but I would like which prefer cuddles abit more (if either do) I have female rats with one male, and none of the girls like cuddles lol

Thankyou-c

Hello. Welcome to the forum.

Is it this one?

The minimum recommended floor space for 2 guinea pigs is 4ft x 2ft so I would be a bit concerned that this doesn't offer the lap space they need to run round in. The ramps also mean you lose quite a bit of floor space and may be too steep for guinea pigs. Perhaps you could look in the housing section on the forum for some ideas of the set ups other people have.

Are you going to approach a rescue? They will probably want to do a homecheck and have their own minimum requirements for housing.

If you're thinking of getting 3 guinea pigs (although I think that's too many for the cage you have) it's probably best to get 3 sows or a neutered boar and sows. It's very difficult to have 3 boars live together and often fails. :)

Hi and welcome :)p

I'm new to piggies myself though i have had my two girls for just over 6 weeks.

I am under the impression that you can have many sows (Girls) in a group but boars tend to be better as a twosome rather then a threesome (i think you're best bet for boars is to get an already bonded pair from a rescue as i think they can fall out- more so when one or the other gets to the teen age when hormones come into effect) I don't have boars and don't have experiance of them so others may be able to offer better advice but this is just what i have picked up from this forum.

As for toys, my girls love thier hay ball, socks cut open at the end stuffed with hay, tissue rolls stuffed with hay and tunnels to run in and out of! :)

For 3 guinea pigs, you need to be able to provide a minimum of 2x5 ft groundspace according to the RSPCA. Guinea pigs are not big climbers, which means that they need more flat space than other rodents. As guinea pigs are group animals, you need to at least keep two together. It would be great if you conisdered rehoming from a rescue!

Here is a toy thread where we have collected lots of ideas for toys.

We have a fairly wide selection of informative threads in our reference section; you might find it very useful.

I think the Trixie 150 is one of the biggest you can buy. Some people have them on here and have put a second level on. Quite a lot of us have C & C cages that we made ourselves (cubes and correx).

You can see them in the housing gallery on the forum or on this site.

I thought about making one of those, i have a run for my rats made out of corex but its now obsolete as they just leap over it...! How easy is it to make a secure roof on one? Cos my rats freerange in the same room so obviously I don't want them harassing the piggles. Never heard of that cage will do a google now.

I haven't got a roof on mine but quite a lot of people have because they have cats, etc. You make a hinged side with cable ties and clip/ peg the opening sides. Hopefully someone who's made a secure one will be about tomorrow. :)

Yeah I'm sure its quite simple really. My OH is great for that kinda stuff ;) I keep my rodents in the end part of my attic, which has sloped sides. If I can find the space when i get my new rat/hamster cages in I would like to make one so it fits under one slope for the whole way down. Kinda hard to explain...if it was just 1ft high could **** make it about 3ft wide and..well however long the wall is, about 8ft i reckon. Can fit a 2ftx4ft viv in easily (in the reptile section lol). Looking online at a website for building them, look pretty funky. My corex was just boring white. Only **** is thinking if I would be able to find one piece for those exact dimensions? Maybe can request them? Or maybe make them up out of various pieces...although that seems like it would be harder to clean.

BUT then again I do like having proper built cages, especially if I go away and they would go to stay with my mum, a large enough but conventional cage would be advantageous. the trixie looks good, good enough for a pair? :) Ahh my minds rambling but I have just finished work thats my excuse :))

Correx can be bought in 8ft x 4ft sheets. You can use gaffa tape to stick it together though if you need it bigger. It's still easy to clean. It doesn't really get dirty too much if you have towels/ fleece because it just gets damp from any wee soaked into the towels. Spray with disinfectant, wipe clean and dry, and Bob's your auntie.

The trixie 150 is definitely big enough for 2 as long as they get regular floor time as well.
Happy thinking. :)

Its similar to that cage but not exactly. I was under the impression it was one of the larger cages available. I originally wanted this : http://www.pennypet.de/Kleintiere-S...ege/Kaninchenkaefige/Nagerheim-SAMMY-150.html as it seems to be the largest pig/rabbit cage I can find, but its not 2ftX5ft and doesnt ship to UK anyway. I saw alot of people use the Nero cages, but I cant seem to find one thats 2ftX5?

you could get a nero 4 and add a second level with wood and correx and guttering linned with carpet for the ramp this will give you extra floor space for them but they would need floor time out of the cage each day or you can get ferplast 140 second hand via the internet for around 40 pounds and a courier delivery for 20 pounds and its 5ft long by 2ft wide i have added 2 sepaerate floors to mine xx

Thats sounds awesome, any pics? I think my best option would be to buy the biggest cage I can, and then add onto it. That way I still have a cage if they need to go on holiday to my mums. How easy would it be to do this without compromising the cage? I suppose the "run" could be built around the cage but keep the door open?
