Hi,
Just like to say thank you to everyone, I found the site yesterday, frantically searching for answers by real people not websites as to answers regarding my poorly piggy.
You all helped with your knowledge and seem to know more than the vets, who where unfortunately little help and very expensive!
But exactly one month after loosing Cleo our 17 year old cat, my oldest boy Guiness (about 5years age -rescue piggy) died in my arms- and although I am still sobbing my heart out reading the posts regarding how they react in their last moments has brought me some comfort , that he may not have been in pain when gasping and running legs- as one member said he was just getting to the bridge.
I have 5 other pigs but Brodie was his best friend and seems to be pining - any ideas?

i really feel for you. it's so heartbreaking when they have to leave us. your lovely boy would have been unaware of anything at the point of gasping and running for the bridge. it's more of the way the body shuts down. so sorry for your loss. x

are all your piggies a group, or were guiness and brodie a bonded pair? i think just offering comfort and extra love and attention is the best thing. i remember when ches passed and maisie was alone. we just sat with her more, and kept her company as much as possible and that helped her until she got her new friend eddie.

x

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have seen one of my dogs gasping and "running" like that in the last moments, as bisandmatt said its just the body shutting down. I am confident that consciousness is lost by that point.

Does Brodie have a particular pal in your guinea pig grouping?

Rio who is 6 months is keeping Brodie company, I introduced them when he was little as Guiness (my old man) didn't tolerate the teenagers ( who live as a very quarrelsome threesome in a separate cage) , but I noticed he keeps running up the stairs to find him, and calling to me when I check on them, he was used to me bring Guiness in with me after his meds each day - I have mentioned in a separate post how he was just getting over an op the previous week for a cyst removal when he got a UTI, which I think must have caused complications as he only showed signs Saturday morning and had one dose of antibiotics , but died in my arms Sunday - My only comfort is that this 2nd illness was quick as he'd suffered enough

I am very sorry for your loss!

Having a piggy dying in your arms can be a very disconcerting experience when you have never been confronted with the physicality of it before. We usually just assume that somebody - whether pet or human - will simply drift away peacefully, but that is not necessarily the case depending on the order a body is closing down; it is actually less the rule than the exception.

A piggy can be in some discomfort, kick or "run" in the very last, usually thankfully short stages of dying. Thankfully, by then, they are mostly out of it and a lot of it is sheer reflex, but it is not easy to witness, especially first time round! Many people not familiar with the process are also left wondering whether it is something they have done to save it or make more comfortable that has ultimately killed the piggy. "Running over the Rainbow Bridge" is a good way of describing it.

It sounds like Guiness had a very loving and caring home. I am glad that you have been able to find the answers that you need. It is normal to have feelings of guilt or having done something wrong in the first stages of grieving.

You are very welcome to post a tribute to Guiness in our Rainbow Bridge section and to share your precious memories as well as your loss with understanding people if and whenever you wish.

So sorry for your loss.As long as he has a friend he will be fine, just make sure he is eating ok.They grieve but he has company so he will get back to his normal self

I am so very sorry for your loss, but relieved that you found some comfort from these pages during his final moments x

So sorry for your loss. I lost a piggy in my arms a couple of years ago and experienced what you did, too. I just thought it was her soul leaving her body but it has since been explained to me. These little creatures leave a big hole behind. I hope that the other piggies are coping well without him.

Really very sorry for your loss of Guiness.

That's so sad. I've recently had to have my dog put down so know how you're feeling. Thinking of you.

Poor Guinness, I am so sorry :(. It mustn't ever be an easy thing to witness.

We lost one of our girls, Poppy (I wasn't home at the time, we were out shopping and came back to find she had passed away). She had only just turned 1 year old and had always been very poorly despite our best efforts. She left her friend Pixie behind who was a bit quiet for a few days, but we got her a new friend as it was only fair and she soon perked up again.

As the others mentioned, it does sound like he was running over the Rainbow Bridge :)

Thanks everyone for your kind words we buried Guiness last night alongside our cat Cleo who died exactly 1 month before, they were good friends so he's got someone to be by in Rainbow land. Brodie is still pining and running up and down the stairs searching for Guiness and calling to him or just lying outside the bedroom area,- its so sad to watch . I'm hoping his other cage mate Rio will be able to bond as close with him.

I am sure Guiness and Cleo are snuggled at the bridge now saying what a loving mummy they have. Massive hugs to you. Hope Brodie starts to recover soon from the loss of his friend.
