Adult Guinea Pig
Whilst I currently use 2 different vets - one who is situated 40 yards from where I work, and are great at giving me septrin for the pigs just on a phone call and a promise to bring pig in if septrin doesn't clear up the usual UTI or cystitis, sometimes the 2 vets I see are on holiday (one has just gone off travelling for 3 months ) - my specialist vet is now a good 2 hr round trip, and you wouldn't want to go all that way for some metacam - (she is a vet referral vet -has 5 pigs herself and has spayed 2 of my girlies ) - you have to go down a really scary hill in Dursley to get to her (not possible if its snowing) and she is often away speaking at veterinary seminars)
I have decided to also register the pigs at a new one opening literally at the end of my road - as a back-up and because they are a pet aid practice - the head vet is the owner and has several other branches in Swindon and he will be working at this branch - so if there are any forum members living in the SN4 area we will now have a petaid practice - you have to take your pig for a health check and pay £7.50 to the PDSA to be put on the scheme - there other practices in Swindon cover SN1 SN2 SN3 SN25 SN26
I will be taking Reg along and registering him - he is the only one of my pigs that isn't insured ,purely because as a single parent I cannot afford anymore than the £60 a month I am already paying for insurance and the fact that he wasn't a "planned" pig - I had agreed to take him and his cagemate as I knew they were being neglected and try to re-home them rather than have them put into an already full rescue, when it became apparent that his cagemeate had problems and there was no way someone would take on a pig that would probably need medical attension.
