Excellent News! Keep it up little one, did they give you any metacam or anything to give him for the next couple of days?

xx

I just had a look and he is getting sleepy now. Does it have a delayed effect? No, they didn't give him metacam. Should I have asked for it? Also I've noticied they clipped everything, not just the back teeth but the bottom and top front ones. They are very short, hope that won't cause him problems. :/

Well, keep an eye on him and weigh him everyday, even twice a day, if he starts losing weight then i would start syringe feeding critical care or mushed up pellets ASAP, if they are too short then he wont be able to eat. Maybe they gave him a dose of Metacam to see him through today and make him more comfortable, the metacam will amke him a bit dosey.

But if he seems quiet and off his food i would go back and get some as it could be that he is in some discomfort, the metacam will make him more comfortable.

xx

Thanks (: I picked up a bag of syringes from work incase we need them. They're 60ml, is that right for a guinea pig?

I usually use the 1ml ones like what you get with AB's. Just cut the end off, not sure what the 60ml ones look like. but i should think it would save alot of time and faffing than using the smaller ones.

xx

Yeah I still have the 1mls from the baytril prescription, I'll see what works best. Hopefully they won't be needed, I'm just going to check on him in a minute.

He managed carrot, lettuce, peppers and spinach this morning. It took a long time but he is getting there.

Isn't it such a relief when you see them sitting there at their bowl munching on their own accord? I remember crying when i saw my boy do that for the first time in 4 weeks, after being syringe fed around the clock for so long! It might take him a while to get back to eating at full speed, but this is such a positive start! x

Yeah I had to go to work last night and when I put his food down before I left, he didn't even try to eat it. It was so unlike him, I syringed his pellets because I was worrying he was going to go through the night not eating. As you say though, it's a great start although he ate maybe half of what he would normally eat this morning. At least he's trying now. (:

Do you think one guinea pig knows when the other is poorly? Kenny has taken to letting Charlie sleep in his bed with him. Which only started when Charlie came back from the vets. Usually they ignore each other. but as soon as I came in the door yesterday with Charlie, Kenny was up at the front of the cage wheeking for him x

Yes they definitely know! We have a cosy cup which our girl Minnie claims as hers when its in the cage, no one else is allowed near it, if she turns her back and someone else is it it she will chase them out then walk away from it again lol. But at the start of Lilly's illness she let him sleep in it (he spent most of his poorly 4 weeks in it bless him) and although my piggies are not cuddly pigs with each other, they all went up to him, licked him, took over bits of veg to share with him - not that he ate any, but they definitely knew, they were all quiet. xx

He's doing great, nearing the 1.5kg he was before (not that he lost much, just a little bit). I've noticied he takes a lot more hay than before as well. Just generallly a lot better, no soft poo either. After what his last owners did to him, he's really done well x

I am genuinely really pleased for you both, and so glad you managed to get his teeth done sooner than the vet originally suggested! It could have been a completely different story if you had of waited. But excellent news. He looks very snuggly xx

Thank you (: and for your advice over the last 2 weeks. I know and if only he had it done before it got like that. :( It's not just him though. When I got him and the other pigs, one of the girl pigs was so poorly, she was losing fur, blind and had only the one tooth left at the front. I picked up all the vets bills for these guinea pigs and the previous owner has just gone and brought 6 rabbits to replace them. (Or her parents have brought them for her). Grrrrr.

Its always the way hun, this is why we promote rescues so hard on here, yes they replace the pets they re-home but its for a bloody good reason!

Its hard to turn your back on animals in need, i appreciate that and have been victim to it myself, but any bought from pet shops, breeders, gumtree or wherever, they all get replaced and the breeding and mis-treating continues. Rescues are not like that and only have the animals best interests at heart.

xx

EDIT: You are more than welcome, i had similar issues with my boy earlier this year, only worse because i didn't spot/recognise the signs quick enough the teeth had longer to grow and cause more problems. xx

Back again, Charlie is poorly. *sigh* this time, it's oral thrush. He's having daktarin, starting that tonight. He's also having pain relief because his back teeth were pinning his tongue down and they had to be redone (rescue were able to do it while he was awake). I took him to a guinea pig rescue this time as I'm sure they are better, seeing guinea pigs everday and all. The lady there said he is to come back for 12 week dental checks from now on. if he gets problems inbetween, she will bring the appointments closer together. Mashing up veggies into porridge to keep his weight up, he's enjoying that x

Brought the Daktarin. I told the woman behind the counter that it was for my 5 year old son. She asked if he had had it before, I said no and if he would be able to do it himself, I said I don't think so (as he's a guinea pig rolleyes).

Aw, sorry to hear he is poorly again, sorry but i dont have any experience or advice, but i am sure others do and will comment. Just wanted to send some healing vibes and huggles.

xx

Thanks, I'm sure he will get better now he's getting treatment from April Lodge. They are great, she saw me late sunday afternoon for a donation to the rescue and she did more for him than any of the vets round here. Plus I got to see the lovely pigs up for adoption, makes me want more lol x

We went for a second appointment and Charlies thrush has cleared up - Kenny how has a fungal problem on his ears! She advised regular bathing in fungal shampoo for both of them. She was also concerned about the way Charlie breaths, it sounds wheezy but his heart and lungs were ok, just got to watch that. Apart from that, they are both doing well.
