hi today we have rehomed 2 new female (fingers crossed guinea pigs ) i have them indoors plenty of choices of places to hide food and water in bowls hanging type treats they weigh 12 0z and 14 oz the guy we rescued them from had no idea of age but were getting rid of 15 i took 2 a friend took 1 i am concerned as they are both static as in not moving they are allowing gentle strokes and didnt panic when i weighed them i have had gp before but older more established any advice would be appreciated

If they are young and in an new environment, i'm sure you can appreciate that new smells, noises and surroundings and people will make them really nervous until they settle in. Piggies are prey animals so give them plenty of places to hide if they are feeling nervous. If they are eating, drinking, and look generally well I wouldn't worry too much.
I'm unsure of the weights but i'm sure someone will be able to advise you on this.
Have a nosey at this sticky, it may help.

thankyou

not seen them eat yet will be more confident when i no some solids have passed through there lips

Have you tried them with some veggies? :)
It might be a good idea to test them with some, but in small quantities to start off with if you didn't know what their diet was like before.
Maybe some cucumber or lettuce, leave them it in their cage and keep your eye out.

yes put cucumber and a bit of apple no idea on age guy i got them from very vague but can keep an eye on there weight he had them all in boxes so i rescued the 2 little ones

Seeing as they sound like they were 'rescued' from a dire situation, give them time to settle.

If they are frozen that will be by fear, let them feel settled, loved and secure.

they seem a bit more skittish just been down the garden and got some dandilion leaves to try and tempt them just worried till they eat

They probably wont eat while your around, As long as they have pellets, hay and some veg, Leave them too it for a little bit to settle in, they will explore eventually. If they have a hidey place, pop some food close to that so they can get it without needing to come out :)

yes we have done all that they have a massive indoor cage in the kitchen we just keep popping our heads round the door to check on them

still not much obvious signs of them eating both still very very quiet will keep an eye on them they seem so small

I brought home a rescue pig yesterday and he hasn't moved much, but I'm not too worried, I've seen him each cucumber and celery and a tiny bit of hay. I haven't actually seen him drink yet though, but I will keep putting cucumber in and wet veg leaves until he does.

Don't worry, I'm sure they are just very scared at the moment.

hi its such a worry we had a really bad experience a few years ago when we had bought 2 from a pet shop both riddled with mites and very underweight but when i saw these 2 in a box on a table my heart took over and we have given them a home the guy didnt even no what food they ate or how old they were they were in a mixed group so it is possible they may already be pregnant i will cross that bridge when i come to it all i want is for them to eat and then i will worry less

Oh dear :(
I hope for the piggies sake that they arn't pregnant, poor things.

Id give them watery veg like suggested just to ensure that they are somewhat hydrated and ensure that all food bowls are placed close to the places that they are hiding so they can take the food.

Give them time. :)

hi came home from holiday to a brand new baby ALBINO piggy born whilst away seems to be ok i have left mum with her friend and although there seems a bit of head bumping it has been ok given a variety of fresh veg banana and dandelion leaves do i need to buy anything extra

I know this sounds silly but have you doubled checked both of their sex? to ensure you don't have one boy and one girl. I'm hoping suzygpr will be able to help you with the baby side of things, but generally you need to check the mum is ok - no bleeding/lumps still inside her. Weigh the babies when possible and ensure they are feeding ok.

Hello

First priority is to sex the adults - http://www.cavyspirit.com/sexing.htm
If they are not the same sex they must separated immediately.

Then to make sure the baby is feeding from mum and all is ok please read through this link as it contains lots of very good info.

If you have any questions please start a pregnancy thread in the right section so your post will be seen quickly by experienced forum members. http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=11

If the mum looks to be weakening please call your vet rather than post on the forum as time is essential during an emergency.
