Hello this morning we got three 6 week old female guinea pigs. This is the first time we have had guinea pigs. My question is what veg/fruit do you feed your guinea pigs daily?
I know they need unlimited hay and pellets. But I'm unsure what fruit and veg to buy for them and how often to feed them.
Thank you in advance x

Excellent, thank you for your help, the breeder we got them from has been fab aswell and helped with any questions i had x

I'm struggling to keep variety in my piggies's diet & and tring to make sure they get plenty of vitamin C. I tend to give them a small slice of bell pepper every day but they usually leave this. Monty will eat a cherry tomato ( I only give him half and try to only give twice a week) . Max doesn't touch tomato. They'll eat celery leaves . The food they go for first when they get their veggies is lettuce. They never tire of this. Am I wrong to give them lettuce every day?

They should not have lettuce everyday as they need a balanced diet. How about fennel, corriander, pak choi? There are many things you can try.

I think I'm trying too hard to give them what they like. As I said already - they always go for the lettuce 1st - every day. I give them coriander quite frequently too and fennel once or twice a week. Is pak choi OK to give piggies? I thought it was one of the veggies that should be limited .

I just want to say thankyou for your help. I'm introducing veg and fruit slowly to them. I feed them fresh fruit or veg twice a day and they have unlimited hay and nuggets. So far ive tried them on yellow pepper, carrot, tomotoes, apple and salad. Is the yellow pepper ok daily for vitamin c? I'm only giving them one type each time so i can see what they
like then once i get an idea of what they like i can give them a few choices each time. If I'm doing anything wrong please let me know.

Hi I'm very new to this but when i tried peppers the first day they didnt touch it so the next day i mixed it with some carrot and they ate it all. Have you maybe tried mixing it with something you know they like. Worth a try.

Thanks for the advice Frost - I'll give anything a go to try and improve their diet.

Mine have romaine lettuce every day for their dinner - they love it!

Breakfast is a mix up. They have celery, cucumber, coriander and pepper every day. Then I alternate broccoli and a tiny bit of melon with baby corn and a tiny bit of apple. I know many wouldn't agree with daily fruit but am just trying to give a bit of variety as my boys are quite fussy.

They occasionally have parsley and basil and get a mountain of dill every couple of months. And small amounts of carrot every couple of days.

Thanks for your advice. I've heard that it's not a good idea to give romaine lettuce every day - what do others think?

My boys are fussy. Monty eats tomatoes - Max doesn't. Max eats baby corn - Monty doesn't. To be honest - I think I've been giving them too much variety enabling them to pick out their favourites ( lettuce !) and leave the rest. Anyway , they won't be getting lettuce every meal time from now on.

They can only have tomatoes once a week as they can cause sores on the mouth.Fruit is only occasionally as well as high in sugar and can cause sores too.Mine like celery, parsley, broccoli, baby sweetcorn, cucumber, spinach now and then, bell pepper every day, carrot now and then, cauli now and then.

My two love their veggies. They have celery, carrots, bell peppers, cauliflower (leaves and florets), Broccoli (Florets and stalk), cabbage, cucumber, baby corn, little gem lettuce, swede and parsnips. Obviously they don't have all of that every day, I just give them a random selection and chop and change every day. They have a constant supply of hay and I feed them a cup full of Marsdens pellets a day. The veg is definitely their favourite though.

I have some melon in at the moment so will be trying them with a bit of that later too.

Fab thanks its lovely to see what other people feed theres.

Ohh and i wasnt sure on the baby corn so i know now i can feed them that.

I feed my piggies veggies once a day in the evening. They get one cup of vegetables per day. If possible it is better to split their veggies into two feedings (i.e. 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup in the evening), however I'm usually rushed for time in the morning so I can only manage one feeding.

Below is an idea of what I feed each pig on a typical day.

Daily staples:
2 large lettuce leaves - from two different varieties (eg. cos and red leaf, green leaf and butterhead).
2 sprigs of coriander
1/8th of a bell pepper

Then I choose one thing from the following list to add to the above and rotate it each day:
Small chunk of zuchini
2 cherry tomatoes
1 baby carrot
Small chunk of celery
Small chunk of cucumber
A few leaves of either - endive, arugula, swiss chard, garden cress, chicory greens.

These veggies are things that I know my guinea pigs will happily eat, and that I can find readily available from my local grocer or supermarket. I steer clear of things like parsley, beet greens and spinach which contain high levels of calcium. I also avoid things like broccoli, cabbage and brussel sprouts which can cause gas when fed frequently.

They get fruit no more than once a week, and even then it's only something like a small slice of apple or one strawberry each.

Remember to introduce each new vegetable gradually and in small amounts! Sudden changes in their diet can cause bloat and diarrhoea.

I hope this helps, and congratulations on becoming a new piggie owner :)

I feed my 4 guinea-pigs on Oxbow Cavy Cuisine High Fibre Feed, its hard to find in the UK & it is pricey but from some places but I'm sure if you have a search though the internet I'm sure you can find a place that sells it quite cheap :), but its great quality food, the base of the Pellet is Timothy hay and not Alfalfa/Lucerne (Alfalfa/Lucerne shouldnt be fed to guinea-pigs over 7months old) They also get 1 bowl of Fruit/Veg a day, 1 bowl of pellets(their bowl is re-fulled once empty as they usually eat half a bowl a day) , Unlimited hay (i top their hay up thoughout the day) & Water in their water bottles Hope this helps :D
