Hello all,
we have not had our 2 guineas for long (about 1 month). They have up to now been really happy in their new home, getting run time too. They have nuggets with some veggies every day, sometimes dandelion leaves.. Today, Barney seems a bit lethargic and has soft poops. As his lower half is white, he is getting a bit messy. I have cleaned him up and put them back in the cage now after some run time but am worried and it is obviously Sunday so no vets surgeries today. Could it just be too much veggies/ leaves? Am hoping so and that he will perk up tomorrow. Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks
Claire

Hi Claire,

Welcome to the forum.

Has he had and grass? Sometimes over doing it on grass can cause a little bit of a tummy upset and wet poo's.

I would suggest taking him off veg this evening but making sure he has plenty of hay, if you can handfeed him some hay by offering it to him and he will take it that is a good way of getting him to eat, but not all piggies will take hay from hands...
The poo's you say are wet, can you clarify it is not diarehha wet?

looks diarrhoea wet to me - poor little thing :( has not had any veg since this morning. has not had any grass since a few hours ago.

It sounds to me like he has eaten too much grass too. I agree to keep him off veg and to get as much hay in as possible. Also he may be feeling very hot if he has been outside. If he has runny poo he will need rehydrating. They can have Dioralyte either plain or flavoured. If there is no improvement he will need to see a vet. Is he bloated at all?

have given him a bit of diaoralyte (which he took fine) to see if that helps and popped him to bed in his hay for some peace and quiet. Choccy the other guinea pig seems a bit bewildered by it all. Not sure if he has eaten or not. If no improvement by the morning, will take him to the vet. will keep you updated, poor little guinea :(

To be honest I would take him just to get checked anyway. Tummy upsets can be quite serious especially if his gut stops moving. It is important that he keeps eating. If you aren't sure you can give him some mashed pellets on a spoon.

how often to give dioralyte? how much do you normally give?

great thats what I gave, will try and squeeze in another one later maybe. thanks for all your help

Hello all, Barney seems much better today. Gave him some more dioralyte this morning and only pellets. Running around more. Just out in the run on concrete this afternoon. What do others do as regards putting out on the grass? Everyday? How long for?

Hi, do you fertilize or spray your grass? Yes, grass does make the poop a little runny, but hand feeding hay while on the lap gets rid of the runs in a healthy piggy. I'm just wondering whether there was some ingredient on the grass that could have made your piggy sick. A vet visit is a good idea

no we dont at all! he is much better now - too many green leaves I think
