Hi, am hoping I can get some advice on a problem I have with one of my Guinea Pigs.

I have 2 Guinea Pigs that I got from a rescue centre last year. I believe them to be about 3 years old.

Betty had a lump removed from under her chin at the beginning of this year. It has healed nicely but I've noticed over the last couple of weeks that she isn't cleaning her bottom. I have been using cotton pads and water to wipe as much as I can away but am now thinking I need to give her a proper bath (I have just order some shampoo from Gorgeous Guineas).

She is eating and drinking as greedily as she always has done and her and her hutch friend are as chatty as ever.

I currently have them both indoors.

What else should I be doing and how can I encourage her to start cleaning herself again?

Hi and welcome!

I would have your girl seen by a vet, frankly. It could be a UTI (urinary tract infection). http://www.guinealynx.info/uti.html

PS: The members on this forum are doing their best to answer all posts, especially in this section. Please help us by stating the nature of your problem in the title in order to give our most experienced members the chance to answer the trickiest and most urgent cases first and not loose valuable time by rifling through lots of "help" threads. Your piggies will also benefit.

You can further help by stating your county or state in your personal data, so we can pitch the right medical information your way. We get requests from all over the world.

Hi, thanks for the tips.

I will call the vets first thing Monday morning and get her down there.

If it is UTI, could you please ask the vet for a bit of metacam (painkiller and anti-inflammatory) for at least the first 2-3 days. Also ask or buy some probiotics to support the guts against the onslaught of an antibiotic. Generally, septrin (an oral form of the bactrim mentioned in my link) is a lot easier on the guts and tastes much better, so it is worth asking for it. Baytril is still the only officially licensed AB for guinea pigs, though, so not all vets are willing to prescribe it.

The easiest way of getting hold of cranberry juice is Ocean light from a good sized supermarket.

if you want to check whether medication and dosage etc. is right, please check bac with us. It is worth looking for an exotics (piggy savvy) in your region.
