newbie needs help

They are fearful, especially when young, it really does help if they have a friend - it's very much a "They're OK so I'm OK" situation. If they are indoor they will get used to you sooner.
On their own they worry about where all the other piggies have gone - in nature all your herd disappearing is not usually a good sign and makes them very fearful. If you got piggy from a shop recently perhaps there are still others from that batch still in store? Of the same sex, obviously ❤️

PS: tempting with small pieces of veggie like bell pepper or cucumber will let them know you are not a predator about to eat them! They may not take from your hand at first but offer it near the entrance to the hidey, then leave it there. One day they will not be able to wait for you to drop it and will take it from your hand!
If you want them to come out and explore their new cage you might have to cover it completely at first with a lightweight cloth - I always cover mine at night anyway to make them feel safe.
 
cool ty everyone this is my first pig. almost gave me a heart attack. last night it made this crazy whistling song . i had no idea what it was at first.
 
When I was little (and yes, I'm so old now!) we had two pigs and one died at 3 but the other lived till 5. We didn't know way back then that you are not supposed to keep just one so we never looked for another friend for her. Now in the UK a shop will not sell a pig alone - only in pairs or a three for sows - and the rescues will want anyone looking for a single pig to bring their other one in to make sure they are a match. Our surviving pig, Snowy, would also call out at night sometimes. We thought she was hoping to be fed but the truth is that it was dark and she was probably calling out for another pig and listening for any response. They do also 'wheek! wheek!' with excitement when they think fresh hay or veggies are coming... even at the sound of a plastic bag rustling as they learn that's what food often comes from!

Be aware he may never like being held. At least if you’re prepared for the worst and he does, you won’t be disappointed. Some like/get used to it while others hate it with a passion.
