Hi

I have a girl guinea pig 3 1/2 months old.

She first had fungus on her ears and was treated with itrafungol then after about a week we noticed she had a crusty nose and laboured breathing and took her to the vet who gave her a vitamin and antibiotic jab and did said she may not survive! Took her back that afternoon as v worried and got some oral antibiotics Baytril .15ml twice a day, I have also been syringe feeding her vitamin water 1-2ml a day but it has been hard because I dont want to stress her out too much as she hates the syringe, after a few days of this she stopped the laboured breathing and started to eat a little lettuce, and nut stick. the vet was v surprised she survived!

BUT now I have noticed her poo is a little wet and need some advice on how to look after her.

I have bought some avripro plus probiotic but I am unsure how much and often to give her and also should I still hand feed her food, water and if so how much and often.

I am trying to keep this piggie alive as my son and I will be devastated if she dies!

Nugget weights 404g at the moment.

Thanks for any advice

It could have been the baytril that has upset her tummy, as this can sometimes happen if it is not given along with probiotics, keep up the water intake as this is very important. If you can get some complan this is good for convalesing guineas. Not sure on the amounts of the avipro, never used that. I think that you sholud take her straight back to the vet or maybe see if you can find a cavy savy vet for further advice. Diahorea is not a good sign. Hope someone with more experience on here may come along with more advice for you.

Thank you for your advice, but i think it will be too late for Nugget, she has gone rapidly down hill tonight, floppy and laying on her side, i am sad to say she will not make the night now.

I am afraid Nuggest died 10 minutes after my last post.

I think the Baytril affected her gut as she was very puffed up.

I feel that I could have done more for her but was too inexperienced, hopefully this experience will benefit my other two boys if they get ill.

Please post any info you have to this thread still, so that someone else can benefit from your advice who has the same problems.

Thank you

Hi! I am very sorry to hear that little Nugget hasn't made it.

Perhaps you want to post a tribute to her in our Rainbow Pets section when you are feeling up to it?

Thank you everyone for your kind comments.

Understandably my son who had waited such a long time for his own pet was devasted, and I had to promise a new guinea pig.

We now have Fudge a beautiful baby boy piggie who has been taken under the wing of our other pigs Marmalade and Badger, all boys are getting on really well and I will be keeping a close eye on them all.

xx
