Hello,

I'm new to the forum and thought I'd say hello and introduce our two gorgeous wee girl

This is Lily, my daughter and I got her 2 weeks ago

And this is Milly, who I am picking up on Saturday

Lily is a bit small for her age, but she eats and drinks very well. She had a visit to the vet last week due to a bit of a scabby ear. I've check her all over and it is only her ear that is affected. The vet said it wasn't ringworm and gave her an injection for mites (last Thurs) but so far there is only a slight improvement to her ear. I was wondering if anyone else has had this? Milly will be kept in a separate cage until Lily is all better so that whatever it is isn't transferred.

Did the vet not suggest continuing on with treatment? If the pig is under 800g you can get Xeno 50 which is a ivermectin dosage for animals suffering with mange. Injections can be quite painful so a spot-on treatment such as Xeno would be much more appreciated I think from the pig.

The vet completely ruled out Fungal then, as Fungal can start on the ear.

Welcome also, and lovely girlies x)

Welcome!

Lily, you are a little stunner and Milly is beautiful too.

Hope you have fun exploring the world of piggies.

Hello,

These are our first wee piggies so any suggestions or advice would be great. This site is amazing, so many great pages and loads of advice.

Lily has to go back to the vet next week for a follow up dose of ivermectin. The person that I got her from is paying the vet bill as we'd only had her for a few days when her ear started to look scabby. I have asked them to check with the vet about a fungal infection (after reading through some posts on here). I have been checking her daily to make sure that whatever it is isn't spreading and so far there are no signs anywhere else, just her ear.

Would it be worth putting some vaseline on her ear as it does look quite dry?

Hi and welcome!

AWWW - ginger and white abys! My favourite combination... drool

Mange mites typically start on the back (a v-shaped area of fur loss) with lots of itching, while fungal ear (not necessarily ringworm) is not uncommon at all. For mites treatment, you need at least 3 rounds of an ivermectin containing product spaced 10-14 days apart to catch any emerging eggs for best effect. Make sure that it is appropriate to the weight and stay off too low dosed supermarket/pet shop products.

Ear mites can occasionally come from hay and cause irritation on the inside of the ear, manifesting in a lot of ear scratching and head shaking.

Is your vet a general vet or an exotics (piggy savvy) vet?

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. The vet is very used to guinea pigs and the girl who is giving us Milly goes to him with her piggies too (I also know him as I take my dog there). The person that gave us Lily is taking her to the vet for us but I will make sure that they know that she has to have an additional dose after the next one.

Is it worth treating for fungal as well as mites? Lily is not due back at the vet until next Thurs so I could do this before her next treatment and see if this helps to clear it up? I don't want my wee lady to be suffering if there is something else that I can do to help.

I came home and checked Lily pig over again and found a wee lump at the top of her back, near her scabby ear. The skin looks a bit inflamed and the a wee group of hair seems to be clumped together, causing the lump.

I've read all the info on mange mites, other mites, fungal infections etc but I'm no closer to understanding what is wrong with my wee girl. The symptoms for mites and fungal seem to be quite similar?

I'm going to call the vet tomorrow and have him take another look.

The symptoms are quite similar. Usually mites cause the hair to break cleanly whereas with fungal complaints several hairs will come out stuck to a flake of skin.

Best have her checked again and if necessary treat for both mites and fungal.

Thank you. It does seem like a clump of hair and she's been treated for mites and not fungal so will get the vet to check her tomorrow and get her something that will make her all better.

She hasn't been as friendly today and even had a wee nibble on my daughter's hand and my jumper so I want to help her feel better as soon as I can.

Hi and welcome to you both, Lily and new to arrive Milly to the forum :)

Hello,

Well it would seem that I owe an apology to the Wiebke, I thought the vet that I visit was good with guinea pigs but it would seem not :(

I left her yesterday and when I went to pick her up the vet said she'd ordered some cream and it would be in on Tues. She had taken scrapings and checked for mites but couldn't find any and said it definitely wasn't ringworm. When I mentioned a fungal infection she didn't seem get what I was talking about!

My wee Lily is obviously in some discomfort and I didn't want to leave her for that amount of time without any treatment so she has given me some cream. When I got Lily home I checked her over and the clumped pack of hair on her back has been pulled out and has left a sore patch, which has a sore looking scab on it this morning.

I wanted to order the Coconeem Melt and Manuka and Neem shampoo from gorgeous guineas but now I can't find my bank card 8... My brother will be in to visit in a wee while so I'll borrow his to make sure wee Lily isn't waiting too long.

A quick question though, can anyone tell me if the small bottles will be enough or do I need the bigger ones?
