whilst my pigs were running around inside i have put news paper then a old blanket over the floor to prevent there poo/wee ruining the carpetmallethead, this worked yesterday but today max peeled away the blanket and started eating the news paper and jessie joined in torolleyes. i stopped them and put them back in there hutch but i wanted to know if anyone new why he and she are doing this and if its really bad for them due to the inks:...
thanks-c

Guinea pigs do seem to love to eat newspaper. I used to put it down for mine and found the same. I do not think it is any harm though so do not worry.

I'm sure its okay, mine do it (i always stop them) but when i am not awake I'm sure they do it lol
if you just make sure they dont eat it all the time lie every day than i am sure its fine, for ppl use it for bedding in australia without anything else (i *** but i knw ppl who do) so if it was so bad all there pigs would be dead but they arent lol

My pigs love any kind of newspaper/cardboard. I've noticed that after having a few nibbles of their food they will have a chew of cardboard and then begin eating their food again. I think newspapers use pet friendly inks nowadays, so I wouldn't worry :)

You have to check the ink they use I can't remember what it's called but there's one that most companies use that is safe compared to others that are toxic !

I don't think it's likely that the newspaper you use is toxic (:

I personally wouldn't worry over a little, as said before, inks are becoming more animal friendly. Just don't allow them to eat the equivalent of one sheet as that will likely upset their tummies!

You could always buy a large off-cut of lino to lay down on the floor with a blanket instead? Its probably not going to be kind to your carpet or whatever you have as flooring, because it might stain underneath where they pee.

I would just put mine down on the carpet and if they pee'd, I'd put some kitchen/toilet roll down to soak up the pee right away, which they did try to eat as well lol, but it was enough to soak up pee and not affect them to eat it, and if covered in their own pee, they likely wouldn't want to anyway. As long as its not scented kitchen/toilet roll though.

Hope that helps a bit not to worry too much about it :)

Mine nibble newspaper too.
A friend of mine had piggies when we were growing up and hers used to nibble the newspaper in their hutch to shreds. Never did them any harm and they both lived to a ripe old age. ;)
