Hellooo all :)

I use vetbed with newspaper underneath for the downstairs of my cage and newspaper and hay upstairs. This seems to work really well (piggies are clean, dry and healthy) but there's one problem...that's a lot of newspaper!
Does anyone else have this problem and does anyone know where I might be able to get extra newspapers without having to buy them! I get as many as I can from family and friends and 2 free papers a week but still seem to run low!

Thanks in advance xx>>>

my mum gives me her papers! and sometimes I get a load from the local barbers, she has papers everyday for customers to read!

Luckily my boyfriend's mum gets a lot of newspapers from the care home she works at. Maybe go to your local newsagents and she if they have any unsold newspapers.

Work :)) I am in catering and ask staff to put any newspapers they find in the office for me rolleyes
Asda do free papers so my OH grabs handfuls at a time :x

my friends dad delivers newspapers to the shops and drops me of 10 bunches a month :)) but i always give some of them to my local rescue. Try asking at a news agents if they have any old unsold ones that you could have

I live near a train station and there is a metal box of free 'metro' newspapers placed in there everyday.

If you go down at the end of the day (if you live near a station) the train guards are more than happy with you taking as many as you want as they would only get binned/recycled if not anyway =]

I put on my facebook to ask any friends/family/work colleagues if they'd give me any newspapers they get, and a few people who i didn't expect said they'd save me theirs. We don't get any free ones, but my Dad has a newspaper everyday (telegraph so lots of pages!) so I'm hoping that will keep me supplied with enough. If not, hubby has said he should be able to get some from work if he can beat the cleaners to them!

I've discovered that if any of the paper is visible the piggies will nibble at it!

Don't worry about them nibbling at the newspaper, the printing ink is now vegetable based and the paper simply provides fibre.

Do avoid putting glossy paper in though, the gloss is plastic. (Although glossy paper isn't terribly absorbent either!)

I get all mine free... :)
There's a chippie not far from my moms house and the owner reads on adverage 5 papers a day... And I pick then up weekly... :))
I also have them from the local Chinese takeaway waiting room... :))
Have a little search round places like that...

I was also running out of newspaper for my guinea pigs so I changed my system. I now buy rolls of unprinted newsprint from my local newspaper. It is inexpensive and has the benefit of no ink. I use this and towels under fleece for most of the cage and have two 10" x 14" litter boxes connected with a litter tray. I have my C&C 2 x 4 panel cage set up so I can change each area separately, the bedroom areas, litter boxes and the centre area. This way I can check each area twice a day and change out any wet or dirty areas. I only need to use the newspapers covered by paper towel and bedding in the litter boxes and tray. I have tried many different systems and this one seems the best for my girls and makes clean up easy. I customized the fleece and towels so they fit each area and have several spares so I only need to wash everything once a week. The girls are so good at using their litter boxes and tray that most days I change out the areas to freshen them up not because the are wet. I hope this can help.

Thanks everyone for your replies :)

I have rung round family to ask everyone to save theirs! They may think I'm bonkers though!
I will also ask the newsagent.
Dh used to commute every day and would get bundles of the metro and evening standard. He has a new job so won't be in the city as much :(

I find newspaper the best. I have kids too so really don't want to add to the wash load! The vetbed only just goes in the machine as it is. It's great stuff though!

why don't you try using a towel underneath as well as news papers? But because towels so absorbent you might need less news papers :)) ?

Or get some of those disposable changing mats by pampers, I put them down under the Megazorb, although I'm using newspaper at the mo, the pampers changing mats are brill, as the keep the wee locked away and it's dry on top :)

Don't you get some kind of free newspaper delivered? We get a free one twice per week which is enough. Sometimes, at least in Germany, people offer you that you can subscribe to a newspaper for just two weeks for free to try it out.
