My darling boy, Nigel, has just had massive surgery.

Last week Gina could feel a huge mass in his abdomen. Ultrasound was not conclusive.

Today Nigel went to theatre. The mass was his kidney. It was four times its normal size, swollen because the ureter was blocked with a stone. Gina couldn't get the stone out through the bladder, so she had to open up the ureter itself. He must have been in theatre at least an hour. He's coming home at four!

BIG HUG

I am keeping my all fingers crossed for poor Nigel and hope that he will recover well!

It is always such an anxious time and a real shock when you find something seriously wrong with a pet of yours.

I am sure that Nigel will get the best possible care and lots of love!

Healing vibes heading your way for the wee mite and supportive ones for you hun.

Thanks guys. I'm just concerned about how he'll get on when I am at work tomorrow... he must not eat the stitches.

I am pleased that Nigel is doing well after the surgery and am sending lots of healing vibes for him. When Connie had her stitches, she chewed at one of them and the vet had to 're stick' her. However, I imagine that when Nigel is home, he will be sleepy and will just want to rest. Also, he will be quite sore so chewing his stitches should be the last thing on his mind xx

Good to hear he has made it through the surgery, what a shock though. Poor guy. Big hugs to you Lucinda.

He's home! He's on his own at the moment on soft towels. There's a little blood on the towel (I think from urine, not the wound). He's had some grass. That went down well.

Awww bless sounds like you are taking very good care of him Continuing healing vibes heading his way.

Thanks guys. I'm just concerned about how he'll get on when I am at work tomorrow... he must not eat the stitches.

I read somewhere that guinea-pigs do not like the smell of lavender. Lavender essential oil is antiseptic and aids healing. When my boar started chewing his stitches from his neuter, I took him to the vet who gave him antibiotics, but I also put lavender essential oil on his wound several times a day. His wound healed rapidly and without further chewing from him after that, even though the vet told me it was difficult to stop them from chewing the stitches once they'd started. I wish now that I'd put lavender on his wound from the start.

This is only my experience of course, but it worked really well for me. Lavender is one of only two essential oils that is gentle enough to be applied neat, just make sure you get a pure oil.

I am glad that Nigel is eating. Don't be worried about blood in his pee - that is normal for the first day after the op.

My Minx went through two bladder ops, so I can feel for you!
