My lovely Monkalina the Syrian hammy passed away this week. She was born on 29th September 2012 so went too soon :(

She was a result of an accidental litter my cousin ended up with a mishap and she was the result. The father and Mother I believe came from same shop so could be to do with inbreeding....

She showed no signs of illness and found her in permanent sleep in her bed, when she didn't come to me when I summoned her. Hoping she just slipped away with no pain...

She was a lovely hammy as my cousin had a very special bond with her mother and therefore was able to handle the pups when they were a couple of days old so she was handled daily for all her life, she was so loving and never bit anyone. Excepting me a couple of times when I accidentally leant on her cage, and it was only a nip. This is my fault as when she was younger I never put my hand in her cage. I trained her to come out of the cage for cuddles by herself as I wanted her to have independence. She would always come when I called her but it meant her cage was her territory In which no one was allowed lol, including me.

she had a good life with me so that is a little comfort. She had daily play time in a play pen and more toys than my guineas lol. (I over compensated as she couldn't have a friend due to her breed)

Here's a picture of the gorgeous girlie she was a lovely greyish brown with a white/ cream tummy:

Awww she was beautiful, I'm really sorry Briony, it does sound like she went peacefully in her sleep.

I have better photos but photobucket is having a hissy fit at the moment on my phone. Going to post a better one later once it has finished stropping.

Found this video. She liked to eat her cage base so I tied some knawing blocks in the way. Needless to say she wasn't stupid she chewed through the string within minutes and it took my ages to get it set up. She was a monkey! ignore the sound it was the tv

I am so sorry for the loss of your beautiful little girl. She had a wonderful life with you. huge hugs x

RIP Monkalina
x x

I'm very sorry for your loss, she was adorable but it does sound like she passed away peacefully, if that's any comfort xx

Thanks everyone. I'm getting quite teary about it. Didn't think I would so much with a hamster, as pre her I was not a hamster person, but she was a charector and managed to somehow find a special place in my heart!

My lil Merlin was lovely. He had character. They may be small but they are very easy to get attached too. He used to sleep in my bed when older. Eventually he got to 6! then he had to be PTS as his kidneys went. We buried him under the acorn tree in my local park x

Oh that is so sad. We adopted a hamster 7 years ago and now on our third one. All rescues. They are such fabulous friends and so cuddly and friendly if treated right and such characters. My beautiful girl Jessica died the same way last year, I was so so upset. They may be tiny but they have a huge impact on you.

She looks and sounds adorable. Hugs to you and sleep well little one x

sorry for your loss. I recently lost my JJ ham and was devastated, doesnt matter the size, they always take a chunk from your heart. rip Monkalina x

Plus he was the only hamster I know to manage to chew through his cage....blew my mind one day when there was tennis ball sized hole in the corner and he was sitting on the sofa smiling at me....

Yes I know that feeling monkalina chewed off those little sticy out bits on the base to stop the topbars sliding around and before I rrealised it was a rather large hole. I ended up having to buy about 15 of those chews that bolt onto cages shaped like carrots and bolt them along the sides so she couldnt get her teeth close enough to chew the base lol.

Oh no, so sorry. What a lovely girl. Rest in peace Monkalina. x
