On top of 4 year old Cariad's emergency spay on Thursday, from which she is recovering well now, I have had a very scary weekend with 5 year old Ffraid.

After looking off for over a day without any clear symptoms (and the vet not finding anything on Friday afternoon), she started twisting and shivering with pain on Saturday evening. Her back legs became rather hot and very sensitive/painful to the touch for a time. Over the course of the next few hours, the twisting thankfully stopped. The back legs cooled but became totally paralysed for several hours instead. By five o'clock Ffraid thankfully started to be able to pull them under her body again and a couple of hours later she was able to wobble around a bit.

Unfortunately, her ordeal affected her digestive system quite badly with a partial stasis and gassing, and it has taken a few days of round the clock feeding to keep her going, hence my absence from the forum.

She is thankfully now back to eating on her own (including hay) and getting around, even though the reflex in her right back leg is still somewhat coming and going, and her guts are not quite stable yet - but I have been finally able to have my first decent night of sleep in a whole week!

I am happy to say that my local vet, who I saw again on Monday, was pretty impressed with what I did and how I coped; he said that he would have done exactly the same in that situation. I am very grateful for the support over the phone of a piggy person until the wee hours, to help me figure out what was going on and give the appropriate doses of the meds I had on hand (painkiller, gut meds). It was a very frightening experience!

Sadly, we will never know what it exactly was, as there is no research whatsoever for guinea pigs in that area. It could be a neurological problem (trapped nerve/sciatica?) or a blood clotting issue where the arteries for the back legs split off from the main artery (can obviously happen to cats and will cause comparable symptoms).

But I must say that two major emergencies so close to each other have rather taken it out of me!

Oh my goodness, sounds like a very stressful frightening ordeal! Thanks god all seem ok now..... will keep my fingers crossed things continue to improve!

Why do these things all come at once?

x

What an awful weekend. Poor Ffraid, that must have been so scary for you. I really hope whatever it was has gone away now. She is in the best of hands with you. Massive hugs from the 2 of us x x

These things seem to always happen on a weekend night - but it was with absolute one of the worst nights in my life! :(

Its like they know there are no vets open... :(

So pleased she is on the mend. Bet you are physically and emotionally drained. Give her a little stoke for me x

Having a sick piggy and one with a bad eye at the moment i feel your pain somewhat i'm thinking of having a seat with a reserved sign for me at the vets :))

I've gone past the reserved seat at the vets - I've rented a tent and a toilet! mallethead

Poor you! I have never had a "sick Piggy" before - until Today when Noodles went in to have her lump and nipple removed.I have had a banging headache all day, didnt sleep last night for worry, and she will be staying at the vets hopefully until Saturday so they can syringe feed her for me,as I have to run the shop on my own and cannot close,so would be unable to feed and check on her throughout the day- and I feel absolutely exhausted - hats off to all you guys and all the rescues(Debbie Postles you know who you are!) who do this sort of thing all the time.
Big Hug to you xx

How is Ffraid doing today? x

Ffraid is quite chipper, and her legs are a little better again, thanks! Cariad's wound is healing well and her weight is stable.

I must admit that I simply don't have the physical reserves to run a rescue; I admire everybody who takes on such a demanding job like that but I know that I would reach my limits very quickly. I am still trying to catch up on two solid years of bad sleep and total exhaustion. :(

Pleased that both girls are doing well. Hoping you get some time to relax now and recharge your batteries.

What a relief for you that they are both on the mend. Phew!

Interesting that you mention a back problem as one of the possible causes. Some years ago I had a pig who was partially paralysed by something. One of the possible reasons according to the vet was a slipped disc. I am convinced that he'd had a stroke though. Whatever it was, he lived to a ripe old age and we had the pleasure of his company for a lot longer than I'd thought when he first became ill. Will keep my fingers crossed for your two X

What a nightmare, you must have beebn very worried, glad they are feeling a bit better now.

Ohh what an awful week, one thing after the other :( I'm sorry to hear you're having a tough time at the moment hope things improve soon. lots of love, and wheeky hugs from me, the boys and tabs and coby x

How devastating! I'm really impressed with your energy! When ever things go hairy for our pigs I always find myself a bit of a lump! I panic so much and spend hours at the vets and as soon as the meds are done I'm too emotionally knackered to think about anything else! The boyfriend is the same, I'm so lucky to have him on my team!

well done for such a fast response! I really hope the legs improve for the little girl!

I am sorry that you have been through such a rough week :( I am pleased Ffraid is back on her feet and Cariad is doing well.

You deserve a medal for all your hard work and potentially saved Ffraids life that night with your fast response xx
