Anyone have a nippy pig? My older boar, Alf has started to get quite possessive. He has to be the one who sits closest to me. He loves a cuddle, is very easy to handle, pick up etc but won't tolerate sitting on my lap with the younger piggy, Pedro. He loves Pedro to bits but can't quite handle sharing the love! He even nipped me tonight when I stroked Pedro!

Ive been bitten several times by my boars but it has always been when they are fighting and I try to sperate them. If I overfuss one of the boys, I sometimes get a warning nip that lets me know he has had enough. These nips dont break the skin but I know to leave the pig alone at this point. I still have a scar on my leg from a bite last year. Talk about painful. The piggy just wouldnt let go of my leg for ages.

Cozzie is a devil for biting. Have had blood running out of the bite on a couple of times. Cozzie is still only a few inches long....

mine only nip me if i put my fingerd near thier mouths

but there will nip each other

What a cutie Cozzie is! Find it totally bizarre that Alf bit me when I stroked the other one- I didn't even so much as brush past his fur!

My Mr Bojangles is nippy, for no particular reason - went to pick him up the other day to clean his cage, and he teeth chattered and charged me! How rude.

The only other times I've been bitten are just over-enthusiastic nibbling, or when grooming the long-hairs (Perus!) and they're just a nightmare to do!

My Dizzy is quite possessive as well. The second time Llewelyn had a testosterone overload when she was in season, I found her completely dug in and worn out in the corner of the cage.

But on the following day, when I sat down with them for breakfast, Dizzy interposed herself between Llewi and me, her back to me, and started licking Llewi down from top to bottom. Then she threw me a dirty look over her shoulder, cuddled him some more, gave me another LOOK to make sure I really got the message and went back to her food. That put me in my place!

The pigs certainly do teach us humans proper piggy manners, don't they?

PS: I've made the experience that some guinea pigs are - especially at first - not as secure in their "top pig" role and tend to be rather officious about it.

Just make sure you always make a big fuss about you nipper first when you have them together, and he should be OK and eventually more relaxed about his relationship. Have you had them together for long?
