The only way I think of it is imagine if you never went outside and was stuck indoors it would probaly drive us crazy lol. I think aswell as getting the essential amount of vitamin D it is also for a piece of mind for your piggies there is nothing better than being outside and having a nice breeze and taking in a deep breath of fresh air. even if they can't go out every day. just a few days a week would be nice for them I reckon .:))

I think that it is important to remember that it is natural sunlight that guinea pigs require. For example, if they spent their days in a windowless shed, garage, outbuilding, room etc then they will more than likely become unwell.
So long as guinea pigs are placed in a room with windows where thy can have some natural light, they should be ok.

This goes for most animals and not just guinea pigs :)

My windows don't open (for some strange reason the last tenant nailed them shut?!). I can't think of anybody I know with a garden. I mean, my guinea pigs still leave the house for vet appointments but otherwise, they're indoors. will they be ok? I didn't know about the windows having to be actually open.

So long as they don't get too hot, are not in direct sunlight, have good balanced diet, water, hay and exercise, they should be fine :)

Oh yes they have free run of the whole back room in my flat and when I'm at home, the rest of the flat. Plus lots of everything hay, veggies, etc. It's just the direct sunlight they don't have. That's good to know.

Although my shed has no windows, the door is left open all day unless it raining, then I put their light on and close the door over to allow fresh air in. If it's dry my lot are let out in the garden for a run and a stretch even if it's just for an hour a day.
