Hi
My pig Austin has always disliked fresh food. He eats hay and occasionally pellets but he is small and weak. He went down hill over Christmas and we went to the specialist vet Simon Maddox yesterday - he gave him antibiotics and painkillers as he may have an inner ear infection (slight head tilt) but otherwise we’re not sure what it could be. He won’t eat by himself so I’m syringe feeding critical care. Any tips on how to get him eating for himself. He is still eating hay thank goodness.

My boy Chunk was/is exactly the same, he has a suspected middle ear infection/abscess. In our situation, getting him on the antibiotics and pain meds seemed to help after a week or so. He is still not 100% but is eating a bit more for himself and I’m topping up with feeds. So sorry, that wasn’t much help! But wanted to show support and that I know how you’re feeling!

Hi! I hope that your boy will start to eat a bit more on his once he is feeling better in himself. You can try fresh herbs like coriander/cilantro or parsley to tempt him. It is sadly not the time of year for some tasty fresh grass. These are the things that are generally going down first.

Thanks so much. It’s good to know you’ve made progress. Let me know how Chunk gets on (such a cute name!) xx

Thank you! I tried coriander today but no joy but it is early days so I’ll keep trying fresh herbs x

How’s Chunk? Austin seemed to pick up on sunday and yesterday and ate some celery but no more progress since then and I think he might be going downhill again :( maybe the antibiotics are making him feel sick

Our progress is very up and down but at the minute I’m hoping we are on an up so hopefully Austin will be the same and pick up soon. I think medicines do throw their little bodies a bit out of balance. Just keep going with the syringing, it’s exhausting but it will pay off 😊

Sorry you've had such a rotten diagnosis.
Hope the meds work but make lots of great memories with him now, just in case.
Holding you in my thoughts

Thank you! How’s Chunk?
He is doing well thank you, Simon is pleased with his progress. Just need to keep flushing the wound until the cavity heals to stop further infection.

How is Austin doing?
