So Charlie has gone on his bonding trip for the last couple of days. He’s been tried with 5 other boars, but no luck. There’s one older one left to try. The lady trying them says he seems to want a friend, but once they start mounting him he isn’t happy and it all falls apart there. He put up with a lot of that from Peewee and didn’t like it then.

So I am considering neutering so he could be bonded with a female instead. I’ve rung round a few vets for prices, but a couple of them aren’t keen on neutering without very good reason because of the risks.

Is there any other option? Bonding with a male baby? Or would that go the same way once the baby matures a bit and potentially starts mounting?

When my Ted lost his brother Bill at 5 years old we tried to find a rescue to boar bond him but it was lockdown and very difficult. We decided to have Ted neutered by a really experienced vet in Northampton who Ted went for regular conscious dentals with. Ted was absolutely fine and sailed through recovery. I think if you decide to go down that route then you need to find a good vet who has had plenty of experience in neutering. Could you ask a few rescues locally who they use? there is also our recommended vets list in the green bar above.

A baby boar may be ok until he hits the teenage stage at 4 months so there’s no guarantee that it would work for the long term. Mixed sex couples seem to work best when one boar has lost his mate
Good luck, I hope you can sort Charlie a friend of either sex.

here is Ted with his two wives, six weeks later after neutering

Plus if a vet isn't keen to neuter (for whatever reason) I would avoid them.
It generally means they view it as risky, and are therefore less experienced with guinea pigs.
I would call someone from the recommended vet list and I am sure you will find they are happy to do it and fully understand the reasons why.
It really is worth travelling to an experienced vet to ensure the best outcome.

If you do decide to go down the neutering route, I would phone round vets until you find one who is confident with neutering. I have a neutered boar myself although he was neutered before I adopted him at 6 months old. He’s now 6 years old and enjoying retirement with my 3 sows. He lived with two older sows of mine before they died. He was originally part of a trio of boars before being handed in to a rescue as he was being badly bullied.

Your boy may or may not bond with a baby boar. It’s difficult for us to say but there’s no harm in trying. Good luck with whatever you decide

yes, I agree, it’s definitely worth travelling for a great vet. We used to travel 300 miles each way with Ted for dentals and he and his brother have both travelled that distance home after operations

I can only agree with the others - finding a vet who is confident in neutering is key. There are, of course, always risks with surgery but neutering is a very routine operation.
Bonding with a baby is entirely possible, but long term, you wont know what will happen.

Just going to add a flip side to this debate. I personally would be too scared to put a piggy through an anaesthetic if it wasn't for a life or death outcome. I have bonded an adult boar with a baby and they still like each other a year later. You obviously have to do what you feel is best. ❤️

I’m not too keen on neutering tbh. When you bond with a baby, is the baby naturally submissive to start with? Charlie is quite a submissive pig, even when Peewee was poorly and not moving much Charlie’s pathetic attempts at dominance were laughable! He wants to be friends with a pig, he seems to like their company straight away. Just hates being dominated!
The last piggy left where he is at the mo is 4 years old, so there’s a small chance he might have less dominant feelings by now? Maybe?!

Ok scrap that, apparently him and the older piggy lasted less time than it took to put up the run!
I’m going to pick him back up.....

Mostly babies are accepted as they wouldn’t normally be able to challenge for dominance but we have seen cases on here where a bonding with a baby does fail straight off. Really all you can ever do is try - what seems right on paper may fail and what seems like it should fail, works!
If he doesn’t want to be mounted, but is a submissive piggy, then he is going to need an equally laid back piggy.

Percy my older piggy is not bossy at all. Pepper who was the baby (only about 5 weeks) just wanted to be with Percy straight off. As Pepper got a bit older I think he was a bit cheeky with Percy but Percy would gently put him in his place and Pepper has just accepted that he is bottom pig. I always feed and handle Percy first just to show Pepper that Percy is the boss and all hides have two exits just in case. And I also leave a bit of dirty hay in each of the hides on clean out day so it always smells of both of them so they can’t get territorial over them.7767586F-F9D8-4D8E-B1C1-731F491A9FE7.webp
