Hi i started advertising my guinea pig rescue a week and a half ago, i told all vets and have put up loads of posters, i have also put an advert on Preloved!

All i have had is one email asking e if i would take in their elderly pig! I thought i would be inundated by now and turning people away.

Am i doing something wrong?

I really wouldn't worry-it will be lke London buses, none for ages then a load at once! enjoy it while it is quiet plus it's a good sign that people WANT to keep their piggies ;)

It may help if you put your appox location on your profile for people browsing on here too :)

I'm sure it won't be long until you have too many people coming to you. It's a good sign (in a way) that no-one has been coming to you.

It was the same for me when I first started out. Give it a few weeks and the phone will start ringing. It will happen so don't worry.

I started out by taking a couple of unwanted pets, with hutch, from the Adtrader.

If you have a local Pets at Home you might want to give them your details as we have rescued a few guinea pigs from their doorstep over the year.

Give me a shout if ever you need any help or advice and of course you can advertise your rescue on the animal rehoming group I run.

Don't be disappointed - it's early days yet. Building up a rescue takes time, it's a very gradual process. The first year is very difficult.

You have done everything right so far. Don't forget to make links with lots of people like your local RSPCA Inspector and all the animal rescue centres in your area. Quite often people will be referred onto you if they are busy.

You may not get any calls for several weeks yet and you may then only have a steady trickle of pigs coming in but the main thing is is that you are out there, waiting to help. If there is a "big rescue" then you can help too.

You could also pick up free to good homes if you are comfortable with that. One tip though - don't tell them you're a rescue! Don't worry it's unlikely that they will ask you any questions anyway but just say as little as possible.

My friend once phoned a ftgh which was a piggy living with a wild bunny rabbit (must go together it said) My friend explained said she was a rescue and could she help and she was told in no uncertain terms to **** off ! My friend then phoned me and I had to be Joe Public but the woman never asked me one single question about how they would be kept - only made me promise I would keep them together ............ yeah right ! He was a darling little piggy too.

Anyway completely off topic.............

just give it time. People will find you if they need you. Good luck.
