I'm really stuck. As Charlie will be on his own in a few weeks, I thought I should start looking for company for him. So I made a list of the rescues I can travel to (including cat and dog rescues). Not one of them will rehome to me. One wanted pet shop cages only, others wanted "off the floor" housing, some said adult male pigs must live pn their own and some wanted them to have 24/7 access to an outside run. Mine are always indoors and have an 8ft c+c run plus a hutch to sleep in. I don't want to put them outside or downsize their living space. What to do? I have checked the Piggy Bank map and the nearest rescue is 3 hours train journey away. :/

I really am very sad that the rescues you tried had such odd requirements. Before I got piggies I applied to the only place I knew which was the r.s.p.c.a and was turned down as I do not have a garden. I adopted Mooli from bobtails rescue which is in surrey. Could you try there?

I would but Bobtails is 3 1/2 hours on the train with 4/5 changes, I was hoping to find something a bit closer.

Check the thread that has just been posted as somebody said they have piggies that need rehoming and they are willing to travel.

When you get these sort of attitudes from rescues, it's not surprising that owners will go & buy from a pet shop. There's too many piggies needing adoption to have silly rules like some of the above.

Hmm, only 2 hours away. I will give them a call tomorrow. It needs to be somewhere that offers boar dating. Charlie can be aggressive and dosen't like other guinea pigs much. I'm sure the right pig is out there for him though!

I would love to adopt from East Peckham but it's way too far away. If only I was a bit closer to London and not right out on the coast...

I'm wondering if I should just give in and buy the pet shop cage. I hate the idea, especially as he's used to having almost a whole room to run in. However, this way, we can adopt from a local rescue and they offer boar dating. There's still plenty of time yet before he's on his own so I can shop around for the biggest possible cage.

the smaller space might make him more aggressive. Don't understand their grounds for refusal. Surely space and security is the main thing for piggies.

They say it's easiest to keep clean and can be kept off the floor. I actually find them harder to clean - at least you can get in c+c cages to change everything.

Please do not feel pressured to get a cage. He will have less room and they are harder to clean. did you contact the person who has to rehome their piggies and said they would travel?

Why don't you just say you have a pet shop cage?

If you didn't live so far away I would lend you my one to use so you can adopt the piggy.

Have you tried April Lodge in Sandwich and TAG in Margate? And if they're being picky on a cage I would just get one and then switch straight back to your usual set up as soon as you get the pig home!

They do homechecks and follow up visits. Hehe, everytime they come round, I'll tell the pigs to get back in the cage quick! :)) Really, it would feel wrong to lie to the rescue.

Whilst that's good for the piggies it's not so good for you! They have quite odd rules, shame a piggie is missing out on a good home :( If they're all refusing to re-home to you you could try Pets at Home in WWX, as they often have piggies in the adoption area there :) (even though it isn't proper adoption)

April Lodge are the rescue that said pet shop cages only. I also don't like that they are funded by pets at home. :/ I volunteer at Tag and we only have two sows in at the moment. Single females do come in about once every few months but they go very fast. There's a long waiting list for them (Spayed sows that is, Tag spay all females before rehoming).

Aw bless you, i really feel for you.... lol your last post did make me laugh though hehe...just an image of these piggies jumping out the c&c and into a store bought cage :P

Wow that's bizarre! I always got the impression April Lodge was really forward thinking @) And I tried to volunteer for TAG last year but I couldn't get hold of anyone, would love to though! I hope you find a pal for Charlie :(

Hmm, the last page of the thread isn't showing. Must be something wrong with my phone.

Tag is great. Actually I just phoned and said can I volunteer and they said did I want to start that day. I only work one or two days a week as I have a full time job too. I just let them know when I'm free and turn up. I always spend ages phoning them to get through in the morning, I think sometimes they leave the office unstaffed for vet runs, etc. I would love to adopt a piggy from them but the last two sows in haven't been advertised anywhere as they went straight to people on the waiting list. I guess everybody is looking for single pigs to pair up.

I've replied with some info on Charlie. I am nervous about bonding though, Charlie is one grumpy old man.

All you can do is try. He may even take a liking to a piggy and it could all work out fine.

Phoned RSPCA Medway as advised. Apparently adult males must never live together, they must also never be paired with females as they harrass and bully them. And she helpfully said, don't try going to a pet shop or buying an animal, it'll never work out. She advised a cuddly toy.

We are going to try bonding with some baby boars from a family friend. I'm hoping he finds a pig he likes! Rescue just isn't an option, I've been through the phone book and tried rescues out of the area. I'm thinking of Charlie too, he hates being in his carrier and I can't take him on a train journey for hours.

Ouch! Have you contacted Cavisgalore in East Peckham (which is in Kent)?
There is sadly a good reason why there are only so many recommendable rescues on the Piggy Bank map. :(

East Peckham is three hours away on the train/bus with changes. Charlie isn't in perfect health and it stresses him out when he has to go on the train. If we lived closer, I would try.
