i wonder if you could try and video her when she is making the noise etc, then you can show the vet?

I'm sorry for you hon, it must be so frustrating...

thanks honey, I called suzygpr, I think we might possibly be on a better track. I'm attempting syringe feeding with maybe some positive result.

Sorry only just been able to get on here but this has been playing on my mind, how annoying that you still dont have any answers! How does she seem in herself this evening? x

barbie had some syringe food at midnight and 3 am. at 6 am she was eating pellets :)). no little chuttering noises either so i'm hoping she's ok. i'm watching her closely this morning......

thanks toffeewoffee

I do hope she gets well soon. It must be terribly frightening not to be able to get a proper vet. At least you are getting food into her.

thanks everybody.

actually she is eating pellets and hay and some veggies this morning. definitely not with as much energy or enthusiasm or wheeking as usual. she hasn't drank so i'm going to just syringe some water i think, although I made sure the veggies were really wet.

ts1;1315476I had done lots of research in the beginning for a cavvy savvy vet - there isn't one that i've been able to find in Athens. My vet (for my dog) has told me that most greeks wouldn't bother to take a guinea pig to a vet said:
Just been reading this thread and I'm so sorry about your poor little piggie. I really hope you manage to find a vet who will be able to help her!

I'm truly horrified by what your vet had told you that most Greeks wouldn't bother to take a guinea pig to a vet. Poor little sods - so they they are left to suffer and die. Sorry! I'm at risk of going in to a rant so I'll pull myself up and keep to the topic.

Sending you big hugs and please know I'll be thinking of you and hoping you get to find any vet who has the knowledge to be able to help x

I could also easily get into rant mode here on a daily basis so I understand exactly what you mean.

Its not just that a high proportion of Greeks wouldn't take a guinea pig to the vet, they wouldn't take any animal to a vet. More often than not they drive a dog somewhere and dump it if its ill or they don't want it anymore, this has been more prolific recently with the financial crisis.

There are 2 pet shops that I try and avoid even driving past because I can't stand to see the birds, rabbits etc all squashed into tiny crates outside in the sun all day, (my neighbour has been in to discuss with one of them with not a very pleasant response) this also goes for the fruit and veg markets here, I get so upset about the chickens, turkeys etc, the state they are in and squashed together without food or water that I can't stand to go there.

Amazing isn't it that we are part of the european union and are meant to abide by the same laws!

There are however many people that put water and food out on a regular basis for the strays and my neighbour even took one of them to the vet after it was badly injured in a fight. If as many people as possible can do a little bit, it makes a huge difference.

Lots of healing vibes to Barbie, we have all paws and fingers crossed for her x

thank you. it looks like the pain meds so far have made a huge difference.

anyone with any idea why she is eating but not drinking at all? I haven't seen her go to the water bottle once since 6am.

If you syringe fed her food/ water @8am and she's eating veg with a high water count she probably won't need to drink for the bottle as shes getting enough already. You could try putting a dish of water in with her to see if she drinks from that but I'm sure its normal due to the syringed water and veg that she's not using the bottle.

If you're syringe feeding her then shes most likely satisfied and doesn't need to drink too much.

yeah! she is drinking water, i never thought I would celebrate seeing a guinea pig drink.

with advice and help from Suzy and you guys, I managed to get antibiotics prescribed which have been started, as well as pain meds. Maybe we can turn a vet here into cavvy savvy :(|).

she's still not completely herself but definitely on the up.

Thank you all so much for the advice and being here, particularly yesterday. I didn't feel alone and that really helped me stay calm.

Awww, yay! I'm happy that you got things sorted. Your situation out there sounds a lot like where I was in Southern Spain. When I worked at a Vets out there the majority of our customers were English or Dutch :{ Talking of market places too...I got my dog from one where he was sat in a hamster cage! mallethead I know now that I shouldn't have got him from there, but I'm also so glad I did!

a dog in a hamster cage? good lord, words escape me. mallethead. i'm glad you rescued him.

toffeewoffee she's doing fantastic so far.

Syringing meds is not easy and i'm not sure i get all the dose into her with dribbling and moving her head but we're doing our best. She seems to have her appetite back and her wheeking for veggies although she is still more quiet generally. Hopefully on the up and keep going up.

Thanks for asking. xx

I remember the fun we had with syringe feeding too, he wore more than he ate :))

Glad she is doing much better, well done you x
