Ok, so last night Noel wasn't feeling too well. He had diarrhea, i kept him warm and as clean as I could was told to put him in his cage with Liam over night and check on him in the morning.

When we got up for work I realised Noel was laid out next to his hay not moving, we took him to the vets, but as we got into the car park he had gone.

I'm hoping my stroking as he died comforted him in some way, both me and my other half are absolutely gutted. I very rarely see my man cry but Noel was special.

I haven't cried like this for years..... Liam is lost without Noel.

Any advice to keep Liam happier?

So sorry to hear this. You are very welcome to leave a tribute to Noel in our Rainbow Bridge section.

The sticky suggested by Jesss has some great advice for looking after a bereaved piggy.

Sleep well little one x

I am ever so sorry for your loss. Diarrhea can kill very quickly. You are welcome to post a tribute to Noel any time you feel up to it and would like to share your loss with some people who understand. :(

Here are tips on what you can do for a bereaved piggy: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/looking-after-a-bereaved-piggy.109674/
Your closest good rescues are either Milhaven in Keithley or BARC in Barnsley; both offer dating for bereaved boars. Finding a new friend pretty quickly is the best thing you can do for Liam; it will never be the same thing as with Noel, but that is not the aim of the game.

We are going to take Liam to our local pet store tonight, have him checked over and find him a friend I have put Noel in his cage with Liam to say goodbye.

Cheers everyone, this place really helps xx

I am really sorry to hear about the loss of Noel. Huge hugs x

RIP Noel

The pet store are going to cremate him tonight and give us a friend for Liam, I just hope he likes who we choose

Do you have any rescues local to you? Some rescue actually carry out boar dating so that they can choose a friend who is compatible character wise. We have a rescue locator but I think it is down at the moment.

I have not heard of a pet shop offering cremation before.

Ok, am editing, as have seen Wiebke's post above, maybe give Milhaven a call?

I bought them at pets at home, they are giving us another free as we have only had them a month.... or I would have gone to a rescue centre, can't afford to buy a new one at the moment. I would love to know what caused him to get ill, because I am worried Liam will get ill too now.

Please be aware that you run a much higher risk of fall-outs and problems along the line if you and not Liam choose his new friend. That is why we so strongly recommend dating at a rescue. The key to a successful boar bond is character compatibility, and that is only something that guinea pigs can decide between them. It takes about two canditates on average in our experience to find the right friend for a boar - and that goes for dating with baby boys, too.

Also please make sure that you do a proper formal introduction. Just putting a baby into cage can go very wrong if Liam is not in the mood! You can find tips for intros and information on dominance behaviours at the top of our behaviour section.

Personally, I would wait with introducing a new piggy until Liam has come out of deep mourning, with the exception of him stopping to eat.

Aww I'm sorry to hear this :-( My beautiful Bertie died this morning too. I feel your pain :-( x

So sorry to hear about Noel. I lost a piggy to diarrhoea too in the past few weeks despite extensive vet treatment. It is devastating. I am taking his lonely cage mate boar dating at a rescue this weekend, now he's had time to grieve (and so have I) and he's ready to find a new friend.

Please consider waiting even a few weeks until you have some money and can take Liam to date, it is truly in his best interests. Piggies are finicky creatures and pick their best mates dependant on personality. You wouldn't marry the first person you met when you stepped out the front door and we shouldn't expect your piggy to do that either. It is unlikely that two random young males will get on without any hiccups. We pick our piggies based on a very different set of standards, Liam won't care what colour, shape, size or fur type his new friend is as long as he gets on well with them. Please also keep any new addition apart to start with as well until you are sure any new piggy hasn't got any health issues, mites etc so they don't give them to Liam. It's not uncommon for piggies to come from a store already with a significant health problem. Many members on here have had these sort of problems.

I can highly recommend both BARC and Milhaven as I have dated boys at both rescues before and they have been brilliantly supportive even after I've taken my new boy home.

Please don't feel any of us are being insensitive to your loss. We only want the best for you and Liam, the least stress at this awful time. Many members on here have had similar problems particularly with pet shop bough animals who often come from poor quality breeding stock so we want to help you avoid the potential for further heartbreak caused by illness or fighting boars.

I am so sorry for your loss. Often piggies from pet shops are ill. They are from rodent farms and kept in poor conditions. If you get another piggy from the same place he may also be unwell.
