Hi

Not sure if this was the right place to post but....

We will be renovating our basement for 3 1/2 weeks this summer. Currently our pigs are in a large C&C cage which is directly on the floor (no stand) above the basement room which will be renovated.

How sensitive are guinea pigs to noise? Will this be too frightening? Should we move them to the upper level of our home?

My main concern is when the basement ceiling is being done as there will be hammering and general noise right underneath the cage.

Thanks

Heather

I've found that guinea pigs do get used to a certain level of noise over time eg. hoovering, music, TV and people coming and going.
However the hearing of a guinea pig is very sensitive compares to ours, and if this noise is going to be at a level they're not used to I'd strongly recommend you moving them. If they're not used to it they'll find it severely frightening and stressful, plus the amount of builders and other people I assume will be coming and going won't help.
Put them somewhere quiet so they're away from all the activity.

I think you have to have 50 posts to PM general members.

I've two noisy girls and mine cope ok, we've had work done and had no trouble at all. Maybe add more igloos and places to hide in just incase they want to try and escape from the mayhem. :)

I dont know how sensetive piggies are to noise. I can only say what i would do personally i would move them, its not like they have the oportunity to move away from the noise them selves if they dont like it

Lol - I'll start on those earmuffs - I'm sure I can fashion something out of cotton balls.

Our neighbour has got work starting on Wednesday and we aren't sure how the piggies will be. We had the same work done in April so the piggies went up to dad's because of the dust and stuff. Our neighbour was supposed to get done at the same time as us but she can be really weird at times and makes up excuses so she's put it off to now knowing that next door have a newborn baby! We don't really want to take the piggies up to dad's and back again as much as he enjoyed having them :))

We've just had our kitchen pulled out and a new one installed, I moved Keith and Kevin up to my son's bedroom and made sure the door was shut, they have been fine :)

I think I'd be inclined to move them as far away as possible from the noise.

i think it depends on the pig doesnt it?

My lu does give a damn if the hoover is used or if my OH starts fiddling with the engine of the car.

Luigi on the other hand went mental today when the hoover went off i had to move him he looked so disressed.

I'd say put them somewhere else if possible just to make sure or put them in a run in another room in the day and then back in their c and c at night?

We had a lot of building work done last year, and the pigs were fine. I tried to shield them as much as possible from the noise and the dust, but they basically ignore it as soon as they realise that the noise is not coming after them.

awww Vickyt love the pigture!
