Junior Guinea Pig
Hi all!
I’m wondering if anyone has been in a similar position to me.
Both of my boys (Bean and Toast) are currently receiving treatment for a URI. They had an initial 2 week course of antibiotics where they stopped ‘croaking’ but then it returned so we’re back on meds again.
The vet has extended their meds for another week and we’ve introduced nebuliser sessions. Since his time in the nebuliser box (only had two sessions) Toasts ‘croaks’/‘hoots’ appear to be louder than before?
I’m wondering if this is possibly because the mucus is lifting and his body is shifting it?
The vet has said that the nebuliser is to be used for long term maintenance of the infection as the antibiotics and anti inflammatories alone aren’t fully clearing it. He said that as they can’t cough up the phlegm like we do, his body has to get rid of it differently which is why he likely sounds a bit noisier after his time in the box.
Is this a thing? Do the noises get worse before they inevitably stop after infection is cleared?
I’ve found it so hard finding people that can relate or have been through this and got to the other side with healthy pigs so any experiences with this kind of thing are so welcome!
Both are otherwise healthy, lungs and heart sound good on last vet visit two days ago, they’re eating, drinking, pooping (a lot lol) and general breathing sounds good too.
Thanks in advance! Pic of the boys to make the post a bit happier
