Hi,

I had wrote a post a few weeks ago about my pig and her breathing.. it hasn’t improved so i have booked an appointment at an exotic vets.

She keeps choking every day multiple times a day and yesterday she was choking silently you could just see her ‘gag’ although they cant gag. It was very frightening and I had no idea what to do so i rubbed her stomach quite fast and the same on her back to see if anything would help and it eventually stopped. She didn’t seem to phased by it, went on as normal afterwards and that was the end of that until 5am this morning where she woke me up to choking.

Anyways, just wondering what id expect at the vets? The earliest I could get was Friday at 3:30 although I was given times on monday and tuesday that I unfortunately couldn’t do.

Thanks

Good luck at the vets.

I took my piggy Pepper to the vets on Friday with noisy breathing. They checked his eyes, nose, mouth. Listened to his chest and heart. Palpitated his tummy. Weighed him and took his temperature. I hope that helps.

I’ve had exactly the same thing three months and two sets of antibiotics. The vet checked her over, heart and lungs all fine likely upper respiratory tract infection. The vets other choice was a possible tumour somewhere in throat if the antibiotics didn’t clear it up. My piggie was eating really well and was also making the noise you describe. I hope
It goes well!

All the best. I am sure that your vet is checking both mouth and the heart at as well? The gagging is definitely not normal.

Hi,

I do have a video uploaded onto youtube of her doing this, its very short and i had just held her for a bit she was making a lot of sound so i filmed it to see if I could get her choking and silently gagging. She did twice very quickly. If she is quiet at the vets I will offer to show them this video as it shows what she keeps doing in the cage, when I hold her and just in general.

Hopefully that link works. Thanks.

Is she doing this just whenever or is she eating when doing it? I’m wondering because mine has done this when eating a few times. Just did it tonight like 3-4 times while eating her hay/food after I have her her meds. Freaked me right out.

Hi

It looks like potentially heaving hiccups to me? Are you see them mostly during or after eating veg?

No! Sometimes during eating, shes very slow, its never anything like that when she eats. She does it when shes just sitting with me, doing nothing. She woke me up as she did it three times in the space of a minute.

In this case, it should be definitely investigated; including potential dental issues.

She has to go back for xrays next week as she has potential heart disease. This is because she thankfully made her crackle sound and he said it was fluid on the lungs ect and its an indication of heart failure.

Hi

Glad that your vet has been able to find the cause. Have they given you any medication, like a diuretic to drain the fluid from the lungs and prevent a further build-up? (frusol or furosemide etc.)

Heart problems are often treatable, as other members with heart piggies can assure you - not rarely for several years. :tu:

No medicine as of yet, probably will have some after her x-rays on tuesday. Thankfully this vet is really good and seems very genuine.

All the best!
Just an update.

She has heart failure and an uneven blood flow through her heart. They did the two x-rays and an ultrasound which we were not aware of until he briefly mentioned it on the phone. Said that she will require longterm medicine to manage this and that he wants an update in 7-10 days time.
