Why is it when someone comes into your house, be it a friend or a plumber etc... Do they look in the piggies cage and go

" what you got in there? Chinchillas? (substitute another animal if you wish)..."

My gran even though she had animals all her life still cant remember i have guinea pigs and calls them hamsters... and every person that has come into my house call them everything but guinea pigs...:))

Its like they have never seen piggies before... For an animal that is supposed to be a popular pet, not many people have a clue what they look like....:))

Anyone else have this problem?

Oh i so know that feeling rolleyes

My best friend is a guy, and one that cant stand animals at that! He always asks how the 'gerbils' are... He hasnt got a pet, never has never likely to, so when he visits my 100+ pet household, he finds it all a bit bemusing as to why anyone would want a large 'pigeon' (ducorps cockatoo) in their living room is a mystery to him!

Luckily though, most of my family got the animal loving gene too, so they are quite pet friendly, although not to extreme measures as i am!

I do find it funny when workmen, strangers etc come in though, their faces when they see all the animals.... lol

My maths/physics tutor always used to ask how the hamsters were then English tutor thought they were all rabbits ?/ Didn't matter how many times I said guinea pigs they still got it wrong. Some people call them the beasties aswell :))

My OH's mum saves their veg peelings for "the hamsters." I've told her many times that the pigs eat what they eat & not peelings.
I've have been asked why i bother to take them to the vets (my hamsters too) when "if it were me i'd just go buy another."
I won't repeat my words :(|):(|)

yepp..people always call my piggies 'hamsters' I'm like, 'cor i have pretty huge hamsters, dunno what i have been feeding them haha!'

i don't understand how some people don't like animals?..its beyond me? :o like some people don't like even like the feel of animals and cant stroke them, its MAD! i cant imagine not like animals, my life would be crap without them haha!:))

My flatmate's mum keeps calling them gerbils - but she used to have gerbils and she calls her gerbils guinea pigs! Usually people just comment on how massive my piggies are, they call them guinea pigs but I'm pretty sure in their head they are thinking of a gerbil or hamster or something...

my moms boyfriend is such an ass. hes always like 'they are rats, and rats should not be pets' 'they are nasty rodents' so every chance i get i shove one in his face. hes scared of them. he always talks about throwing them out of the window of a moving car and i get SOOOO MAD. i dont know what she sees in himgrrrrgrrrr

Yip - everyone calls them hamsters or gerbils! I get really peed off with them - I don't get their boy and girl children mixed up.....so don't do it with me animals!

I am also fed up with being called Dr Dolittle - I only have 2 cats and 2 guinea pigs........and I don't understand a word that any of them say! :))

I think people are still surprised to see piglets in the house - there's still the expectation that guinea pigs and rabbits are outdoor pets in wooden hutches so to see little faces peering up at them from a run on the lounge floor or in the kitchen is a shock to most. Even more so when they're kept in bedrooms or allowed to run free in the house.

Traditionally hamsters/gerbils are bedroom pets and pigs/rabbits are outdoor pets.

Maybe it's a cultural difference, but I don't know anyone who keeps guinea pigs outside here, although I know some people who keep rabbits outside, and others who keep them in. But thinking back to my childhood and my son's friends now... not one outdoor guinea pig.

My boss always referred to Piggly as cat food though, as in "How's your little cat food doing"... took some doing to explain to him how offensive I found that, until I started referring to his little dog (that I love to bits) as the "cougar food". And my family would always just refer to Pigglywink by name, a) because they thought it was a funny name, and b) because they couldn't remember what type of animal she was.

yup, i get "hamsters". all these uneducated people....pah! rolleyes :p

Crikey if you can be called Dr. Dolittle with your pets, I guess some people on here could be called Noah? lol.
I let the electric man in to read the meter a couple of days ago, the meter is in a cupboard in my piggy room. The look of surprise on his face when 8 piggies very noisily greeted him. Strangely, he didn't comment though. Maybe it is part of their training not to comment on things they see in people's houses... a bit like window cleaners? he he x

My cousin called Flora a rat! No way is she! I only speak to edumicated people! :(|)

My dad affectionately calls them the rats. Obviously he knows they are guinea pigs. I don't mind my dad calling them the rats as I know it's just his way of being somewhat affectionate about them!

My great-aunt, on the other hand, calls them hamsters.

Yep! i have someone on MSN that says "How are your gerbils?" and i'm like "i've told you, they are called guinea pigs" and yeah people don't seem to no the difference between hamsters and guinea pigs. :))

My dad calls one of mine "Alright, glurpy rat!" even though he knows they are called guinea pigs.

i get my mum saying "cant you just put them outside then you can have your flat back?" etc etc etc. plus everyone finds it funny to say rats and my one remaining grandparents says she couldn't meet them as she'd vomit, she says they're vermin and full of disease rolleyesrolleyes

i just think their lives must be so empty without the love of an animal, i know mine's pretty lovely with the love of five xx>>>xoxox>>^)xoxo:<>

Lol yeah I know what you mean, most people think mine are hamsters rolleyes

I used to have a close up picture of my piggies on my computer desk top at work and people always used to comment. One girl said that they were huge with rat faces :( It used to get me mad as they are the most beautiful boys!

Luckily, my family are all pet people. My mum even talks to my boys and refers to herself as granny! :)

Yep..I get sighs and shakes of the head and.."Sam its no wonder you never have any money!" I dont care..most of my animals are rescues and they make me happy and that in itself is priceless! x)

Oh i get the "no money" thing...

And i do agree with them! However i cant imagine now not ever having some sort of animal in my house/life...

Yeah I agreee life would be pretty dull without little piggies to run around after and cuddle. The house would be far too quiet with no squeaking piggies in the background :))

when ever peple see my collection of rabbits and guinea pigs they always refer to them as dinner, and always go on about rabbit and guinea pig stew.

I have learnt to laugh along and show i am not bothered where as i really want to punch their lights out.

Laughing at this thread, as my friend always refers to my pigs as 'the gerbils' just to annoy me... found this on You Tube, makes me laugh every time - it's called 'I'm not a Gerbil' by the now sadly-deceased Bing the Guinea Pig
