One of my boys, Tyler, who is around 10 months old now, has recently in the last month or so, all of a sudden decided he likes bar chewing :{

He lives with his nearly 3 year old cage mate Fuzzy and has decided that he likes to keep chewing the excact same square on his c & c cage. They live in the kitchen off the living room and its loud! I don't think he really does it in the day time, I mean I work full time so I can't be sure but today he's been fine. But come tea time its on off on off a lot. Fuzzy and the other boys don't pay any attention. I thought he was bored so i've tried extra toys and stuff but he ignores them.
I've been keeping pigs for many years and never known anything like it! I mean all pigs chew but this is the same spot all the while?! :^-
It's also not an attention thing, I dont think because he doesn't like being picked up. I tried tapping his nose to put him off but he doesn't care!

Has anyone got any ideas why this has started? Is it his age? Is there anything I can try before I go deaf!?

I have that same problem with a four year old pig. Usually they want to come out of the cage, mine will run out the cage door when it opens.

Could you try washing the bars with vinegar? Or put a hay rack (or other physical barrier) where he is chewing all the time?

I have had the odd piggy who loved to chew the bars when trying to get more food, come out or just for fun (but only for a short phase), but never a long term hobby chewer.

he definately did it today at lunctime when I was rustling the bread bag and he didn't get anything out of me so that was definately a tantrum and it stopped when I ignored him lol so I am going to continue to ignore it, i might try putting the hay rack there, i figured he'd just chew somewhere else but i'll give it a go seeing as he is so in love with that one spot lol rolleyes

My pigs chew on there correx when they don't have a hanging chew toy, it's really weird but the Alfalfa Donut Ring, it lasts a week or two, but with that hanging up they don't chew, when it's gone back to chewing !

I don't know if you have any like chewing and eating toys, they seem to distract my piggies !

Ive had bar chewers before, usually as there other pigs nearby. Theo would **** chew if i hadnt smeared the bars with Vic's- he hates he smell. I also have an open tub of vic by the chew spot (outside the cage oviously and Ive had no chewing ever since and he used to be abl to chew for hours on end and his wee lips would go red- Vicks Vapo rub blssed me with sleep again :)

I like the idea about the vic, might try that. I think it might be hormones too, well I'm hoping so as he's started trying to hump fuzzy, who has cataracts so he doesn't always see him coming, poor thing.
Hoping it will pass soon as he;s 10 months so as long as he doesn't have unusually long teenage months this could pass as quickly as it started.
I have their c & c cage above another on a wooden board so could put the vic on the edge outside haha!

yeah definately give it a go. I smear it everywher and he doesnt go near it, right round the perimeter and over his favourite chew spots.

My boar went through a chewing fase. He would do it for hours and hours, but doesnt do it now that the cage set up has changed and he doesnt live next door to freddie anymore. Good tip with the vocs though :)
