Non-wheeker

Hey everyone, sorry I've been away for ages (health is worse and now on o2 and wheelchair bound) but I'm back with my current piggy trio.

Tenzou who is 4, he's like the old man of my herd. Poor old man has a bit of a poorly ear at the moment so I'm giving him extra TLC. But something has always confused me with Tenzou. In the 4 years I have had him, he has barely ever squeaked or wheeked at me. When he does try its like a rasp but never a normal wheek. Is this normal?

funny you should say that, my piggies are not vocal either, never have been really other than a soft squeek. next door used to have 2 that screamed the garden down when anyone appeared & even that couldn't get mine wheeking.

We had a piggy without a voice Putt and the A special needs piggy Megan who had the horsest voice ever and croaked

Sorry to hear you have been unwell. I don't think your boy is the only non-wheeker. I have had one who used to just make a sighing noise.

Thanks everyone Good to be back. I think he has a raspy voice but he is a rumble-butt. He has a poorly ear at the moment and I've had to give him drops and medicine. Seems so much brighter today.

It's not uncommon. At one time I had four who didn't wheek (out of four guinea pigs) Then I ended up getting my little girl Sakurai who wheeked and then another newbie who also wheeks. I still have two silent ones (well not really, they chew the bars instead of wheeking) and the two wheekers.

Some pigs aren't big wheekers... in addition, some do have hoarser voices than others. Sundae doesn't wheek that much, but when she does she always sounds raspy. She must have been a chain-smoker in a past life! She generally sounds squeakier than my other pigs... her 'chatter' sounds like someone with wet hands rubbing a balloon. My other two chatty pigs have been shriller, and one of my pigs was very, very quiet.
