My lovely Noodles (winner of Prettiest sow - the piggy in my avatar) is having a lump and a nipple removed on Thursday - I know the vet will be giving emiprid for a gut stimulant afterwards and she will be staying in until she is pooing and peeing properly, as I have no experience with syringe feeding - but should I ask the vets to get in some critical care for her- as I have previously spoken to them and they do not hold it in stock - how should I look after her when she gets home ,apart from putting her in a hospital cage inside her large pen with her female cage mate?

Hi Tan,

I'd make sure you have syringes, you don't necessary need critical care mushed up Excel do the job well. I would suggest weighing her daily and watching her food intake I always try and top them up just depends on the pig and how much they are eating.

Hygiene is so important, don't leave hay on the ground as it could poke the wound and I would suggest changing her twice daily initially, pain killer of some sort would be a good idea also and don't forget to weigh her daily.

Have you got anyone to help with syringe feeding? I remember my first time it wasn't a pleasant experience and something I wished I'd been shown. Being thrown in at the deep end is never fun.

Good Luck to little Noodles. X

Hi, sorry to hear your litle girl is needing an op. yes, i would ask for cc, it is such a useful thing to have in anyway in case of an emergency. if you need to syringe feed i am sure you will get the hang of it quickly and there are plenty of people on who will be able to advise you how to do it.
post op it is important to keep piggies (and other animals) nice and warm for the following 24 hours as the anaesthetic will make them feel the cold more, i would pop a snuggle safe in with her.
she may have a reduced appetite for a couple of days so have in lots of her favourite things to tempt her with. it is also important that her fluid intake is kept up as her kidneys will have had to process the anaesthetic drugs so make sure she gets plenty of water/ veggies/ syringe food.

Hope all goes well for beautiful Noodles. Just a tip on syring feeding, cut the end off a 1ml syringe it makes giving Critical Care much easier. Always go in from the side. There is a post somewhere on the forum with tips, I'll dig it out tomorrow for you. Love to Noodles x

Noodles has gone in for her op this morning - I will let you all know how she gets on tonight xx

Thinking of you both today x x

Noodles came through the op o.k - and she seems to enjoy her critical care - the lump seemed to be quite contained but has been sent off to histology just in case - hopefully they will keep her in for the next couple of days to make sure her weight stays up and she continues to feed well - looking forward to seeing her tomorrow morning - might actually get a little bit of sleep tonight now.

Oh Tan, I am sooo glad Noodles is doing okay! Keep us posted! Me and the gang will be thinking about you both!

I am glad that Noodles has come through well through her op and is hopefully making a good recovery! Such a major surgery is always quite upsetting!

BIG vibes xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks all for your kind messages - spent half an hour with her this afternoon - she has been taking her critical care well, but doesnt like her chin being wiped apparently - she has a very small scar - clean and lovely looking ,and a fabulous shaved section that wouldnt look out of place on a posh polo pony! She will be coming home on Saturday at 4 as I will be in the shop tomorrow so will be unable to feed her - she is still very subdued but is picking at hay and her greens and her weight is at 1.10 kg - so thats pretty good.

Glad to hear she made it through the op. It's pretty scary having such a wee creature go through it. Recovery vibes from us here :) x
